ATLANTA – De’Aaron Fox may not know the Spurs playbook from cover to cover yet, but he sure was up to speed on the importance of Wednesday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks.

“We definitely want to win,” he said. “We still have their picks, so that’s definitely a thing.”

Fox, who the Spurs acquired from Sacramento in a three-team trade completed Monday, was referring to Atlanta sending the Spurs’ three first-round picks, including their unprotected 2025 choice, in June 2022 in exchange for Dejounte Murray.

Fox’s knowledge of the Spurs’ draft assets underscores why San Antonio sat atop his list of destinations when the Kings opened up trade talks for the explosive point guard.

The up-and-coming Spurs have plenty of young talent and the draft capital in hand to add more pieces as they continue their slow and steady march directed by general manager Brian Wright to becoming what they hope will be a title contender for years to come.

“I just felt this could be a special team,” said Fox, 27.

Fox said he was thrilled to join the youth-laden Spurs and their 21-year-old French superstar and franchise cornerstone Victor Wembanyama. He was expected to make his debut in Atlanta after going through shootaround Wednesday morning.

“Not many guys come around like that,” he said of Wembanyama. “And, I think, not just him but everybody else (in the Spurs’ young core). I felt like the fit would be spectacular. And I feel like I have a lot of years left to play.”

Like many NBA observers, Fox was impressed by the deal Wright pulled off to bring him to the Spurs.

The Kings received All-Star guard Zach Lavine from Chicago and little-used second-year player Sidy Cissoko from the Spurs as well as three first-round picks – Charlotte’s 2025, the Spurs’ 2027 and Minnesota’s 2031. Sacramento also netted three second-round picks – 2025 from Chicago, 2028 from Denver and 2025 from the Spurs.

Backup point guard Tre Jones and reserve big man Zach Collins went from the Spurs to Chicago along with Sacramento’s Kevin Huerter. The Bulls received their own previously traded 2025 first-round pick back from the Spurs.

The Spurs also collected backup point guard Jordan McLaughlin from Sacramento.

“Not losing a (key) rotational piece, I feel like we could be much better,” Fox said of the Spurs.

Fox said he believes he can have an instant offensive impact.

“What this team struggles with is some of the things I can bring: self-creation outside of Vic, being able to touch the paint, being able to get into the teeth of the defense, being able to collapse defenses,” Fox said. “And also I feel like even in games where I haven’t played well, I still command attention. My guys never just leave me.”

Fox doesn’t believe it will take him long to learn the Spurs system.

“I’ve been in this league long enough,” he said. “Most terminologies are the same. Everybody runs a variation of the same type of sets. So when I hear the name of a set, I can already figure out what’s going to happen.”

To underscore that point, Fox talked about a recent game he played against the Spurs when he figured out the play based on where point guard Chris Paul was positioned on the court.

“CP stood in a certain spot and I’m guarding,” Fox said. “I walk up to him like, ‘Well, I know you’re not just standing here. You’re on the left side of the court. I know this ball’s coming to you.’ And he just laughs. And then the play ends up coming to him.”

Another thing Fox said he liked about the Spurs was there potential to be an outstanding defensive team with Wembanyama, the NBA’s leader in blocked shots and the frontrunner for defensive player of the year, protecting the rim.

“What (former Kings coach) Mike (Brown) always talked about when I was with him was to win you have to be able to play defense,” Fox said. "And even the year that we’ve had the best offense in the league, I think we ended up being like 23rd or 24th defensively. And then you get to the playoffs and you really feel that. So, I think with the intangibles here has, this could be a really good defensive team. And obviously you have someone very special back there (in Wembanyama).:

Fox said he was playing the video game “Call of Duty: War Zone” with one of his best friends in his hotel room in Oklahoma City when he learned of the trade from the Kings.

“I was sitting in my hotel room,” he said. “That’s when I got a call from (Kings owner) Vivek (Ranadive). (Sacramento GM) Monte (McNair), (assistant GM) Wes (Wilcox) and (director of basketball operations) Paul (Johnson) – everybody – ended up coming into my room and we talked about it. But from that point on, I’ve been in contact with basically everybody in the Spurs’ organization.”

Fox’s wife, Recee Caldwell, grew up in San Antonio and attended Johnson High School before playing basketball at UCLA and Texas Tech, but Fox said that “funny enough” she didn’t want to return to Texas.

“With family around, there can be distractions and things of that nature,” he said. “… But we’re going to make it great.”

Wednesday’s game could also mark the debut of McLaughlin, a sixth-year pro who, with Jones gone, will back up Paul.

“I’m super excited to be here,” McLaughlin said. “I’ve heard nothing but great things about the organization, and then being here for a day and a half now, it’s a great group of guys. I’m just super excited to be a part of this team and help out however I can. I’m going to just go in there and provide energy and effort like I always do. I’ve been in the league six years now, so I kind of know the schemes offensively and defensively and what teams are trying to do, so hopefully I get acclimated pretty quick here.”
