ATLANTA – Victor Wembanyama, who frequently expresses his admiration and affection for his teammates, won’t soon forget the good times he enjoyed with Tre Jones, Zach Collins and Sidy Cissoko.

“I’m going to miss dearly my teammates,” the Spurs center said. “But I know I’m going to cross paths with them again and we just got to cope with it. It’s the NBA.”

Wembanyama wasn’t alone in expressing those sentiments.

Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson also paid tribute to the three players the club shipped off in the trade for De’Aaron Fox, describing them as “very, very integral parts of our program.”

In the three-team deal finalized Monday, Jones and Collins went to Chicago while Cissoko moved to Sacramento, where Fox played the last 7½ seasons after the Kings drafted him fifth overall in the 2017 NBA Draft.

“Sometimes when you’re not there every day, there are certain guys that get a lot of ink and a lot of questions from you people (reporters) as they should, Victor (Wembanyama), Chris (Paul), De’Aaron Fox and whatnot,” Johnson said Monday.

“But those three guys were big parts of our program and there’s common sentiments from all them, and from us about them, in terms of, we’re sad to see them go, grateful for their time here and appreciative.”

Of the three, Jones had the longest stint with the Spurs after they selected him in the second round in 2020. The undersized point guard averaged 8.2 points and 4.7 assists in 21.5 minutes over 279 games, including 125 starts.

Described once by Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who has been away from the team after suffering a mild stroke Nov. 2, as the “ultimate competitor,” Jones was also admired for his community work, with the highlight being the assistance he gave Uvalde after a mass shooting at Robb Elementary resulted in 21 deaths in May 2022.

“You look at Tre in the four years he’s been here, he’s the fabric of our team (with his) competitiveness and the drive and just being one of those connectors on and off the court,” Johnson said.

Guard Devin Vassell said it was difficult to say goodbye to Jones.

“We came in together during COVID,” Vassell said. “It was a weird time. We spent a lot of time together. I know he’s going to have a great career. All of them are going to have great careers.”

Collins joined the Spurs in 2021 after missing the entire 2020-21 season with Portland due to several ankle surgeries. After making his debut in February 2022, the 6-foot-11 center appeared in 196 games (63 starts) for the Spurs, averaging 9.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 19.9 minutes in 3 1/2 seasons.

“We got Zach Collins when he was out for the year injured and he was the best I’ve ever seen at any level (at) enjoying a team while being injured and being a part of the team in a genuine way,” Johnson said. “It has been very fascinating and happy to see him go from that to…playing at the level he has.”

Although Cissoko played mainly with the Spurs’ G League affiliate in Austin after the Spurs made him a second-round pick in 2023, the guard/forward from France is “on the cusp of being able to be in the rotation” after entering the NBA as a raw prospect, Johnson said.

Jones and Collins penned farewell messages to San Antonio via social media.

“Thank you San Antonio, for everything,” Jones said in an Instagram post. “I came in as a 20 year old kid and y’all gave me and my family a special 4 years that we’ll forever be grateful for. The fans were amazing and showed nothing but love and support. I will forever have love for San Antonio.”

“Thank you for 4 great years, San Antonio,” Collins wrote on Instagram. “I consider myself very lucky to have been able to live and play in this great city. The love for me and my circle over the years has been unbelievable and all I feel right now is overwhelming gratitude. I will miss playing here and I wish the Spurs nothing but success in the future! Chicago let’s go!”

High school honors Vassell

Vassell was scheduled Tuesday night to become the first player to have his jersey number retired at Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee outside of Atlanta.

Vassell wore No. 24 while playing at the school from 2015-2019. He’s wearing the same number with the Spurs after also donning it at Florida State.

Peachtree Ridge l planned to raise it to the rafters inside the gym at the Heyward Performance Center before the Lions’ game against Berkmar. The Spurs are in Atlanta to face the Hawks on Wednesday.

“It’s the first time a jersey is going up in that school, so it’s making history,” Vassell said.

Medical emergency delayed start of Memphis game

The Spurs’ 128-109 loss to Memphis on Monday was delayed by nearly an hour when a fan sitting courtside suffered a medical emergency.

The incident occurred as players from both teams gathered at midcourt for the opening tip.

Paramedics rushed to help the man, who appeared to be unconscious. Players and staff members from both teams left the court and returned to their respective locker rooms.

“We wanted to give them time and space,” Johnson said.

After about 20 minutes, EMS technicians took the man out of the arena bowl on a stretcher. Once the court was cleared, game officials gave the teams 20 minutes to warm up again and prepare to play.

“Obviously our thoughts and prayers are with the gentleman,” Johnson said. “We hope he’s OK.”
