Spurs’ Stephon Castle earns first Rookie of the Month
San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) drives to the basket on Chicago Bulls center Jalen Smith (7) during the second half of their NBA game at the Frost Bank Center on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024 in San Antonio. Chicago beat the Spurs 139-124.
For both the second time in two years and the second time in two decades, the Spurs have a Western Conference Rookie of the Month.
Stephon Castle took home that honor for the month of January, averaging 14.9 points, 3.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 12 games.
The fourth overall pick out of Connecticut scored in double figures in nine of those contests, including five with at least 20 to lead all NBA rookies during the month.
The 20-year-old Castle is the second Spurs player in as many seasons to claim a Rookie of the Month nod, joining Victor Wembanyama last season. Wembanyama won it three times last season en route to being named Rookie of the Year.
Before last season, the Spurs had not had a Rookie of the Month recipient since Beno Udrich in 2005.
Castle is the lone rookie this season with at least 500 points, 100 rebounds and 100 assists. He leads all qualified NBA rookies in points per game (12.2), total field goals (203), made free throws (106) and total steals (37), while ranking third in assists per game (3.7) and fourth in steals per game (0.80).\
