3 takeaways as Spurs still can’t solve Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Spurs awoke Monday in Memphis abuzz with the news they were about to add a dynamic new piece in De’Aaron Fox.

The downside was they still had to play Memphis that night.

With Fox in San Antonio the morning after his trade to Sacramento, clearing league-mandated red tape before joining his new team on the road, the Spurs experienced the same old result in Memphis, smashed by the Grizzlies 128-109 at the FedEx Forum.

It was the Spurs’ third loss to the Grizzlies in a little less than three weeks, with none of those defeats coming by fewer than 14 points.

“You can almost copy and past it regardless of who’s in, who’s out of the lineup, who’s having a good game for them,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “They play the way they do unapologetically.”

Jaren Jackson Jr. had 31 points, while Ja Morant returned from a two-game stint on the injured list to provide 25 points and 11 assists for the Grizzlies.

It was Memphis reserve G.G. Jackson, however, who really troubled the Spurs, going for 27 points off the bench.

The game turned for good in the second quarter when the Grizzlies rattled off a 19-0 run to gain control. The Spurs – as is often the case when they face Memphis – could not recover.

Turnovers fueled much of the Grizzlies’ success. The Spurs committed 23, which the high-octane Grizzlies converted into 34 points.

“They’ve been very tough this year and have done it to a lot of teams.” Johnson said. “I wish we would have responded a little bit better.”

Playing with the remnants of a respiratory infection, Victor Wembanyama recorded 27 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs. Rookie guard Stephon Castle added 21 points.

It was not enough for the Spurs to avoid an inauspicious start to their annual rodeo trip.

Credit for that – or blame, depending on one’s disposition – belongs to Memphis.

“They’ve got a system and they commit to it night in and night out,” Spurs point guard Chris Paul said. “They push the pace. Everyone can shoot, pass and dribble. They defend. They’re one of the tough teams in the league right now.”

The Spurs aren’t done with the Grizzlies, either. They will be back in the FedEx Forum on March 2 to conclude their rodeo trip.

Here are three takeaways from Monday’s defeat, which dipped the Spurs to 21-26 as they resume their road swing Wednesday in Atlanta:

1. Death, taxes, Memphis beating the Spurs

Forgive the Spurs if they are getting a little tired of being beaten down by the Grizzlies.

Monday’s defeat was their 16th in the past 17 meetings against Memphis.

Clearly, the Grizzlies have the Spurs’ number.

“They play in I would say a stubborn way,” Wembanyama said. “They don’t budge. They don’t really adapt to the opponent’s game plan. They force their way. It is working for them.”

The Spurs have figured out Memphis’ identity. The perhaps impossible trick is to make the Grizzlies break from it.

“The attention to detail on defense, against them it has to be heightened a lot more,” Castle said. “Our offense was kind of hurting our defense a little bit. They got a lot of transition buckets, easy buckets.”

2. Trade expectations

Though it didn’t necessarily show with Monday’s result, the Spurs’ trade for Fox has upped the ante for the club in its quest to build around Wembanyama.

It Fox – who is averaging 25 points per game this season – the Spurs believe they have found the perfect long-term pick-and-roll partner to pair with their 7-foot-3 French centerpiece.

“His resume speaks for itself,” Johnson said. “He’s a top player in this league at both ends of the floor. Dynamic in every sense of the word.”

For his part, Wembanyama is ready to welcome the 27-year-old Fox to the fold with open arms.

“He’s somebody you cannot forget on defense for one second, or he will go by you,” Wembanyama said. “And also a very interesting piece on defense. He can take up very, very important jobs on the defensive side.”

More than that, Wembanyama believes the Spurs are sending a message with their acquisition of Fox.

“It’s a good step in the building of our future,” Wembanyama said. “It just shows that they’re not here to waste time and they’re willing to do the next step on time.”

3. Basketball took a backseat to a medical emergency

The start of the game was delayed by nearly an hour when a fan sitting courtside suffered a medical emergency.

The incident occurred as players from both teams were gathering near midcourt for the opening tipoff.

Paramedics rushed to help the man, who appeared to be unconscious. Players and staff members from both teams left the court and returned to their respective locker rooms.

“We wanted to give them time and space,” Johnson said. “That’s why we thought it was best to just go back to the locker room, just allow them to tell us whenever or if we would be coming back out.”

After about 20 minutes, EMS technicians were able to wheel the man out of the arena bowl on a stretcher. He did not appear to regain consciousness at that time.

Once the court was cleared, game officials gave teams 20 minutes to warm up again and prepare to play. The game, originally scheduled for 7 p.m., did not tip off until 7:50.

“Obviously our thoughts and prayers are with the gentleman,” Johnson said. “We hope he’s OK.”
