MEMPHIS, Tenn – The Spurs’ game Monday night at Memphis was delayed for nearly an hour due to a medical emergency involving a fan in the front row of the FedEx Forum.
The incident occurred as players from both teams were gathering near midcourt for the opening tipoff.
A pall fell over the crowd as emergency medical services technicians rushed to help the man, who was unconscious. Players and staff members from both teams left the court and returned to their respective locker rooms.
After about 20 minutes, paramedics were able to wheel the man out of the arena bowl on a gurney. He did not appear to regain consciousness.
Once the court was cleared, game officials gave the teams 20 minutes to warm up again to prepare to play. The game, initially scheduled to start at 7 p.m., eventually tipped off at 7:50.
The fan’s condition is not immediately known.
Midway through the second quarter, the Grizzlies released the following statement through a team spokesman:
“Just prior to the start of tonight’s game, a fan sitting courtside suffered a medical emergency. We are sending our thoughts and prayers to the individual involved and are thankful to the first responders and medical staff who provided the necessary care. The start of the game commenced after a delay.”
