Highlights: Spurs snap losing streak with demolition of Bucks

Milwaukee Bucks v San Antonio Spurs

Hunting down the deer

The Spurs disposed of the Bucks for their top victory of the season after having won just one of their last six. The first half had six lead changes, but the hosts seized control, outscoring them 45-30 in the third quarter on plays from Victor Wembanyama, Chris Paul, Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell. Then the defense held the visitors to three of 14 from the field before coach Doc Rivers waved the white flag in the fourth quarter.

Wembanyama didn’t start fast, but cranked things up with a monster second half. Castle impacted the game everywhere. And Keldon Johnson also gave a massive lift, scoring 24 of the team’s 54 bench points. Aside from Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton’s production, the only other Milwaukee bright spot was the reflection off of Rivers’ shaved head. The way the home team shot tonight, Milwaukee’s zone wasn’t the antidote to slowing down the Spurs.

Let’s review the pettiest plays of the night.

Wemby’s second straight rejection of Antetokounmpo ignited the break for the Showtime Spurs and was a tone-setter for the backline defense.

The gravity of Area 51’s screen rolls exposed the corner so Paul could be in target practice. This was one of the nine treys the Spurs made in the corner.

Johnson was having one of those nights where much space isn’t needed.

a BIG B0DY first half!

It was as if Castle said, “Heck, let me fling it because Wemby can grab anything.” And he was right… His partner, the Human Highlight Reel 2.0, caught it, spun against Antetokounmpo and banked in a 29-footer. One of the best parts about it is that former Spur and current broadcast analyst Sean Elliot said it didn’t make any sense.

A pull-up, one-legged triple is one of the most disrespectful moves one can pull off versus a rival. Wembanyama’s boldness in trying when the game was far from over is admirable.

A glimpse of the future: Castle shifts into the lane, attracting the extra defender to free up Wembanyma’s power jam. This put the Spurs ahead by 17 late in the game. At that point, it was reminiscent of a boxer torturing their opponent in the ring’s corner with level-changing blows while the audience looks at the ref to intervene.

Even Sandro Mamukelashvili got his licks in.

This was a quality win because the Bucks recently gave the Spurs problems on Jan. 8, and Antetokounmpo is a nightmare to defend for anyone. He still had a big night, but Wembanyama was probably just as good.

Don’t forget to watch all the highlights.
