The case for the Spurs to trade for De’Aaron Fox
The Spurs should be ready to cash in a lot of their chips to get the star point guard if he’s as eager to join them as reported.
The Spurs are suddenly involved in a major trade rumor. De’Aaron Fox’s representatives have let the Kings know that the star point guard won’t sign an extension, so his time in Sacramento could be coming to an end. While it’s not confirmed, it’s widely believed by insiders that his desired landing spot is San Antonio.
It’s not shocking news, since there were rumors that Fox wanted to be traded back in late December. The Spurs were mentioned as a possibility back then, as well. The difference is nothing seemed imminent then but does now and the team most credible reporters say Fox wants to join is San Antonio.
From a talent standpoint, adding Fox would be a massive upgrade for the Spurs in the backcourt. While Chris Paul has done a great job of running the offense, at this point in his career he’s not the type of scoring threat Victor Wembanyama needs next to him to take pressure off him. San Antonio drafted Stephon Castle in the hopes that he could become that type of player, and he has shown encouraging flashes, but the rookie is not close to Fox’s versatility and proficiency as an offensive hub at this point. Devin Vassell, when at his best, provides three-level scoring from the shooting guard position, but he’s struggled to stay healthy and find the consistency the team needs from their second option. Fox would immediately form a fearsome duo with Wembanyama that could make noise in the West this season and for years to come. It’s not a surprise he seems eager to make it happen.
The fit is good, as well. Fox, 27, is older than Wemby but still very much in his prime. He’s also used to operating next to a dominant offensive big after years of playing with Domantas Sabonis. He’s elite as a pick-and-roll scorer, ranking in the 92nd percentile in the league, per Synergy Sports, and is both prolific and effective when driving to the rim, which would allow him to apply more pressure to defenses than the current guards have been able to provide. He’s shooting only 32.4 percent from beyond the arc but he’s taking a healthy six attempts per game and half of those looks are pull-ups, which he’s converting at a 33.6 percent rate. Fox also has an earned reputation as a clutch performer and has the tools to be a good defensive player when motivated. There are question marks about him, like with any player, but it’s not hard to imagine him shining in San Antonio.
The big question for the Spurs is one of price. The Kings don’t have to trade him now and could wait until the offseason. They will likely listen to all offers and go with the best package, which San Antonio would be forced to match. If the asking price is, say, Stephon Castle, salary filler and three first-rounders, Brian Wright would likely pull the trigger, but what happens if Sacramento, which has turned its season around and could ostensibly make the playoffs even without Fox, asks for players that can contribute right away instead of focusing on draft picks? Does San Antonio include both Castle and Vassell? What about Jeremy Sochan? A possible solution if that’s the case would be to try to find a third team that would take draft assets and send win-now players to the Kings. Finding the right trading partner could be tricky, but not impossible.
Fox’s willingness to publicly state that he wants to play for the Spurs and only the Spurs is going to play a major part in making things happen. If he does, other front offices will be unlikely to bid on him unless they believe he can be the last piece of the puzzle, as Masai Ujiri did with Kawhi Leonard. It would also allow San Antonio to make an offer and if it’s rejected simply wait for him to be traded elsewhere, be patient until he becomes a free agent and sign him outright without losing any assets. It shouldn’t be too hard to clear the cap space, but they would need to be extra sure that he legitimately only wants to play for them. Otherwise, whoever trades for him would have the advantage of having his Bird rights and being able to offer him more money. If the Spurs actually want him, pulling the trigger while he’s still under contract seems much less risky.
There are a lot of factors at play, but until more information surfaces, the main takeaway from the reports about Fox’s desire to play for the Spurs is that Victor Wembanyama has made the franchise a destination spot sooner than anticipated. San Antonio needs to be careful not to spend all of its assets on just one piece, but shouldn’t be scared to speed up the timeline when a star is available, especially one that seems eager to join their up-and-coming team.
