PARIS — As the Spurs toured the French capital this week, bouncing from the Eiffel Tower to the Champs-Elysess to Notre Dame to Fashion Week, they were constantly cognizant of the reason they were here.

“At the end of the day,” acting coach Mitch Johnson said, “we have a job to do.”

The Spurs will bid bon soir to Paris with half the job incomplete.

Two nights after rolling to their second-most lopsided victory of the season over Indiana, the Spurs followed with their most lopsided defeat, pummeled 136-98 in Saturday’s rematch at Accor Arena.

Even so, Spurs center Victor Wembanyama — the tallest local kid made good in the long history of Paris — will head back to his temporary home in San Antonio grateful for the memories.

“This week was amazing,” said Wembanyama, who played his first two NBA games on French turf this week. “I’m not trying to get emotional, but everybody made it incredible.”

Blame Tyrese Haliburton for sending the Spurs back to the United States with a split.

The Pacers bounced back from Thursday’s 140-110 loss behind Haliburton’s 28 points, 17 of which came in the final 3:24 of the third quarter.

The Spurs had recovered from a 15-point halftime deficit to briefly take a one-point lead before Haliburton’s quarter-closing explosion, which included five consecutive made 3-pointers.

In sparking Indiana’s 68-point turnaround from two nights earlier, Haliburton did not exactly obscure Wembanyama in the eyes of French fans. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle was hopeful Haliburton might at least be a worthy footnote in a week that was all about Wemby.

“They’re going to talk about Victor after these two games,” Carlisle said. “But they’re going to remember that run.”

The Spurs and Pacers made a little bit of history just by showing up Saturday. It marked the first time the NBA had staged multiple games in the same international city in the same regular season.

Much like Thursday’s game — which was designated a home game for the Pacers in name only — the sold-out crowd of 15,979 was decidedly pro-Spurs.

With a count of “un, deux, trois,” arena emcees got the contest started with a “Go Spurs Go!” chant before tipoff.

There were “Wemby!” chants as the man of the hour made his way to the center circle for the jump ball.

When Wembanyama went to the free-throw line in the second quarter, “MVP!” chants momentarily transformed Accor Arena into the Frost Bank Center.

“I did my best to make this week special, but people still found ways to surprise me and make me feel like I matter for them,” said Wembaynama, who finished Saturday with 20 points and 12 rebounds. “It was priceless.”

The pro-Wemby crowd could not lift the Spurs this time.

After Thursday’s resounding victory, point guard Chris Paul talked about the difficulty of winning two straight games against the same opponent.

In three previous such series on U.S. soil this season — against Memphis, Houston and Denver — the Spurs failed to produce a sweep.

“These games are a lot like the playoffs,” Paul said. “You play, have one day off, then play again Saturday. These are all learning experiences for our team.”

Perhaps the notion of winning two in a row against the red-hot Pacers was too tall a task. Indiana had won nine of 11 before heading to Paris by playing the type of hard-nosed, fast-paced basketball it unleashed on the Spurs in Saturday’s rematch.

Indiana cleaned up its rebounding issues from the first game, won the paint 62-46 and scored 36 points off 24 Spurs turnovers.

After seeing 10 shots rejected in the Spurs’ blowout win two nights earlier, including five from Wembanyama, the Pacers did a better job of staying away from him Saturday. Wembanyama only managed a single block.

“They came out with a lot of fight and dictated the terms for the first half,” said Johnson, whose team was led by 25 points from Harrison Barnes. “We knew they were going to come out and play hard and fast and physical.”

Wembanyama had his moments, but they came fewer and farther between than Thursday, when he put up 30 points and 11 rebounds in the Spurs’ triumph.

In a stretch of the second quarter, Wembanyama scored a soaring basket over Aaron Nesmith, banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the arc, finished a lob dunk from Sandro Mamuelashvili and powered past Ben Sheppard for a two-handed slam.

Then came the third quarter, when Haliburton stole the show from the 3-point arc.

The last time Haliburton was in Accor Arena, he earned a gold medal after playing sparingly for Team USA at last summer’s Olympics.

He drew chuckles after the medal ceremony when he posted the following description of his Olympic contributions on social media: “When you ain’t do (nothing) on the group project and still get an A.”

Haliburton left Paris with a different feeling Saturday.

“I participated,” he said with a grin.

Wembanyama did too, all week long in his hometown.

As the Spurs headed to Charles de Gaulle airport after the game for the long flight home, there is only one thing they wish they could have changed for Wembanyama.

“We’ve been talking about this trip for a long time,” Paul said. “Now that it’s come and we’re leaving, I’m sure he’ll look back on this and realize what a treat it was. We just wish we could have won two games for him.”
