For Spurs and Pacers, Paris has been a (literal) wild ride
PARIS – There are few cities in the world with more famous iconography than Paris.
There is the Eiffel Tower. There is the Louvre. There is the Arc de Triomphe and Champs-Elyesses.
Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle says he has enjoyed a different kind of tourist attraction during his team’s stay in the French capital.
“The ride on the bus has been the most exhilarating thing so far,” Carlisle said.
He is not joking.
With the Pacers in town to face the Spurs in a pair of NBA games, and with it being Fashion Week in Paris to boot, getting anywhere by motor vehicle has been a challenge.
To that end, the NBA and the city of Paris have provided the Spurs and Pacers with a police escort two and from Accor Arena.
It has produced some entertaining bus treks to say the least. The teams’ drivers have had to get creative to navigate the snarl.
“The ride was … interesting,” Indiana guard Bennedict Mathurin said.
“Action-packed would be the term,” said Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson.
“You’re driving on the other side of the road,” Spurs guard Tre Jones said. “There’s scooters coming into your lane. They don’t care out here.”
Carlisle began his news conference before Thursday’s game marveling at the bus trip he had just taken, which he described as if it were something out of Disneyland Paris.
“We are weaving in and out of stuff,” Carlisle said. “We’re all of a sudden going down the other side of the street. It’s the most phenomenal experience I’ve ever had.”
Forget defensive driving.
“This was offensive driving,” Carlisle said.
Johnson said the Spurs enjoyed a similar experience.
“They’re stubborn in a good way,” Johnson said. “They’re going to get the job done. It’s led to some laughs, and maybe grabbing the seat in front of you.”
In the end, both teams arrived at Accor Arena for Thursday’s game on time and unscathed – thanks to drivers Carlisle called “flat-out bad asses.”
“They got us here safe and sound,” Johnson said. “We appreciate them very much.”
Wemby’s All-Star push on hold
Victor Wembanyama’s bid to become the Spurs’ first All-Star since 2022 has been delayed, but not yet denied.
The 21-year-old center was not among the starters the NBA announced for this year’s All-Star game, leaving him a strong candidate to fill out the Western Conference roster as a reserve.
Wembanyama has not surrendered hope.
“It would be incredible of course, but to be honest I did not have that on my mind at all,” Wembanyama said after wowing his hometown fans with 30 points, 11 rebounds in five blocks in the Spurs’ 140-110 trouncing of the Pacers. “There’s a lot going on. We’ve got games to focus on.”
Players selected as starters from the West were Golden State’s Stephen Curry, Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James, Phoenix’s Kevin Durant and Denver’s Nikola Jokic.
They were chosen by a combination of votes from fans, NBA players and a media panel.
Wembanyama finished fourth among West frontcourt players, narrowly missing out on a starting spot in favor of Durant.
The Spurs star finished fourth among players, fourth among fans and second among the media ballot.
Seven All-Star reserves from each conference, as chosen by a vote of coaches, will be announced Jan. 20.
Sochan strong in comeback
Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan made his return from a five-game stint on the injured list Thursday, and chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
Sochan had been dealing with what the team eventually termed a bone bruise in his lower back, which caused him to miss six of the previous eight games. Previously, Sochan had missed 13 games with a fractured left thumb.
“We missed his edge, we missed his defensive presence,” Johnson said. “He’s had some back luck between the thumb and the back. That’s why we’ve been overly cautious with him. We don’t want this to be an in-and-out situation with that. We want this to be a consistent availability for him.”
