PARIS – Victor Wembanyama took a pair of demonstrative dribbles Thursday, weaved through traffic and threw down a rim-shaking two-handed slam dunk.
The certifiably pro-Wemby crowd at Accor Arena went appropriately nuts.
And this was only the pregame layup line. There would be more where that came from in Wembanyama’s French homecoming.
With local fans seeming to cheer his every breath, Wembanyama painted a basketball version of the Mona Lisa as the Spurs routed Indiana 140-110 in the first of two games this week in the French capital.
“I told Vic after the game, this is one of the best, most complete games I’ve seen him play in a long time,” Spurs point guard Chris Paul said. “He played a great game on both ends.”
Playing in Accor Arena for the first time since starring in France’s silver-medal run at last summer’s Paris Olympics, Wembanyama ended with 30 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and five blocks.
An early highlight came in the second quarter, when he dribbled behind his back to evade a pair of Indiana defenders, briefly lost control of the ball, then recovered to finish a thunderous slam.
A late highlight came in the fourth quarter when he tossed the ball off the glass to himself for another dunk.
In between, Wembanyama played a game befitting the standing ovation he received when he exited for the final time in the fourth quarter.
“The country of France should be very, very proud,” Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said of the 21-year-old. “He’s a once in an I don’t know how many generations player.”
Make no mistake: Though this was technically scheduled as a home game for the Pacers, the Spurs – and more specifically Wembanyama – was the overwhelming draw.
The two games sold out within 24 hours of tickets going on sale. The NBA says ticket-buyers pilgrimaged from 53 countries and territories to catch the show, which was covered by approximately 600 working media members.

With the eyes of a continent on him, Monsieur Wembanyama was nothing short of magnifique.
He absolutely took over in the third quarter that turned the game in the Spurs’ favor, recording nine points, five rebounds, three assists and a whopping four blocks in the frame.
At one point, Wembanyama blocked Pacers’ shot attempts on three consecutive possessions. It would have been four in a row, but referees called Wembanyama for goaltending a Pascal Siakam scoop shot on Indiana’s next trip down the floor.
Propelled by Wembanyama’s do-it-all heroics in the third quarter – which ended with a tip-in of a Julian Champagnie miss at the horn – the Spurs led 105-80 heading to the fourth.
“When he dominates the little things and the fundamentals of the game, it’s absolutely spectacular,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “When he embraces that, it can be a scary stretch at times.”
From start to finish, the night clearly meant much to Wembanyama.
Before the game, cameras caught him singing along with 15,935 other voices to the French national anthem. It was the first time he had heard it before the start of an NBA game.
“Every game there are some similar feels but also different,” Wembanyama said. “Tonight was definitely different.”
When the French-flavored arena hype man took the microphone and bellowed, in English, “Are you ready for the show?” The crowd responded with a resounding “oui!”
When Wembanyama grabbed the mic himself before tipoff and addressed the crowd – “What’s up, Paris?” he said in English before reverting to his native language – fans hit a state of delirium not seen since the French Revolution.
“I don’t know what Victor said before the game,” Carlisle quipped. “Whatever he said worked.”
Once the pregame pomp and circumstance was over, the Spurs were laser focused on the business at hand.
The homecoming king himself set the agenda.
“Winning is all that matters,” Wembanyama said.
Devin Vassell chipped in 25 points and Harrison Barnes had 20 for the Spurs. They also got a boost off the bench from Jeremy Sochan, who returned from the injured list to contribute 13 points off the bench.
Center stage belonged to Wembanyama.
Even with every eye on him, the pressure did not rest as heavily on Wembanyama’s slender shoulders as it did the last time he played Paris. In August, he had the weight of an entire nation riding on him.
Thursday, all the Spurs were asking was for Wembanyama to help them halt a three-game losing streak.
He obliged and then some.
The game went so well that the Spurs’ other Frenchman – little-used forward Sidy Cissoko – got some run in the fourth quarter to help close out the blowout.
Despite a busy week for Wembanyama back in his hometown, Johnson had no doubt his star would rise to the occasion once the game tipped off.
“Even as a kid, he’s had the attention, the cameras, the microphones, the spotlight on him,” Johnson said. “He’s very clear about what he wants and where he wants this to go. He’s very grounded in that.”
The cameras, the microphones and the spotlight will return to Accor Arena on Saturday when the Spurs and Pacers square off again – this time with Wembanyama’s club designated as the home team.
As Wembanyama showed Thursday, he is destined to be ready for all of it.
