3 takeaways as Spurs blown out by Grizzlies sans Ja Morant

San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) tries to block a shot by Memphis Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane (22) during the first half of their NBA game at the Frost Bank Center on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025 in San Antonio.

Nine days earlier, Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson came out of a 16-point loss at Milwaukee refusing to sound the alarm or punch the panic button.

Yes, the Spurs had just gotten walloped by the Bucks to prolong a three-game losing streak. But getting walloped, Johnson pointed out, had not been a habit of the Spurs so far this season.

Flash forward to a pair of games this week at home against Memphis, and Johnson’s proclamation hasn’t held up quite as well.

The Spurs were humbled 140-112 on Friday by a Grizzlies team missing All-Star guard Ja Morant. That came two nights after they were routed 129-115 by a Grizzlies squad that had Morant on the floor.

“They are in the top tier of the league in terms of having a real identity and playing into that identity,” Johnson said. “They are very, very disciplined and consistent in that regard. It does not go with the score, the results of a play, the reffing, who’s in — they’re very clear on who they are as a team.”

What became clear this week is that, for now, the Grizzlies are on a different plane than the Spurs.

With Morant nursing a sore foot, three other Memphis players provided 20-point nights. Reserve forward Santi Aldama led the way with a career-high 29 points, while Desmond Bane and rookie Jaylen Wells chipped in 22 apiece.

For the Grizzlies, the victory was the 15th in the past 16 meetings with the Spurs, and extended their winning streak at the Frost Bank Center to 11 in a row.

The Spurs have not won a home game over Memphis since Jan. 5, 2019.

“We’ve just got to find a way to weather the storm, especially when teams go on runs,” guard Stephon Castle said. “Try and get to the second and third action every possession, trying to make them guard, tire them out a little.”

Devin Vassell led the Spurs with 21 points, while Castle added 20. It was the third consecutive 20-point outing for both players.

Victor Wembanyama bounced back a bit from a 5-of-19 shooting performance in Wednesday’s loss, going for 19 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks.

He extended his streak of multi-block games to 17 in a row, a career high.

It wasn’t nearly enough to keep the Spurs from getting blown out for the second time in a week — and the third time in nine games.

“We know in a season it is not going to be a straight line,” Wembanyama said. “It’s going to be ups and downs. This is not easy. We’re not going to go 82-0 in the season.”

Here are three takeaways from Friday’s blowout, which dropped the Spurs to 19-21:

Pace a clear problem for Spurs

The Grizzlies average an NBA-leading 123.4 points per game for a simple reason. They get up a ton of shots.

Memphis plays at the highest pace in the league, exactly the type of team the Spurs have struggled against.

The Spurs have dropped a pair of games this season against an otherwise mediocre Chicago team that plays at the third-highest pace.

They had to outgun two of the other top-4 pace teams (Atlanta and Washington) on the way to high-scoring victories.

When Memphis combines its preferred pace with the defensive clamps the Grizzlies displayed Friday, blowouts ensue.

“It’s discipline,” Johnson said. “And you have to fight that with some relentlessness back, but it need to be disciplined.

“We want to play fast, but not in quite the same light they do. Last game, I talked about a style of fight where they start imposing their will on the game.”

The Spurs need to figure out an answer before touching down in Paris next week for a pair of games against Indiana. The aptly named Pacers also play a high-paced brand of ball as well.

“It’s not a ‘young’ thing, so I’m not going to say that,” Johnson said. “But I do think it is an experience thing of understanding fool’s gold, for lack of a better term. Just understanding that everything isn’t as good as it feels at the time in the first, second and third quarter.”

Johnson says play on through Memphis run

The game got away from the Spurs during a horrendous ending to the third quarter that seemed to happen in a blink.

With 3:35 to play, the score was tied at 86.

By the time the horn sounded on the end of the quarter, Memphis led 102-86 leading to the fourth.

Johnson did not call a timeout during the Grizzlies’ 16-0 run, preferring players to figure things out on their own.

“It’s one of those where I think guys were trying to make plays,” Johnson said. “The way they guard and the way the game was going, it probably was going to be the second, third or fourth action or person trying to make a play.

As Memphis heated up, the Spurs responded by panicking and taking quick and or bad shots — a Keldon Johnson early-clock 3-pointer, a Tre Jones drive into traffic, quick-trigger 3-pointers from Vassell and Julian Champagnie, a couple Wembanyama misses.

By the time the Spurs broke their four-minute scoreless stretch with a Castle free throw early in the fourth quarter, Memphis held a 104-87 lead and was in complete control.

“I don’t know if we took bad shots, we took quick shots,” Johnson said. “And again, you just put yourself in the potential possibility of you missed the shot, here we go. And that’s what happened in that stretch.”

Santi Aldama, Spurs killer

Add Aldama to the list of role players the Spurs would prefer not to see again for a while.

Two nights after hitting the Spurs for 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, the 24-year-old Spaniard carried the Morant-less Grizzlies on Friday.

Aldama’s 29 points were a career high, while his five 3-pointers equaled a season best.

His totals over the past two games: 19 of 34 for 49 points with 18 rebounds.

With numbers like that, Aldama might never want to the leave the Frost Bank Center. The Spurs, meanwhile, will be happy to see him go.
