Victor Wembanyama scored 20 points with 23 rebounds and 4 blocks on his 21st birthday in Saturday night’s overtime loss against the Denver Nuggets.

CHICAGO — Victor Wembanyama got almost everything he wanted for his 21st birthday.

The Spurs star was dominant for parts of Saturday’s rematch against Denver at the Frost Bank Center, scoring 20 points to go with a career-best 23 rebounds.

It wasn’t enough to lift the Spurs past the Nuggets, who claimed a 122-111 victory in overtime.

Coming on the heels of a 113-100 win in Denver on Friday, the near miss might have left Wembanyama and the Spurs satisfied. It did not.

“It doesn’t mean it’s enough,” Wembanyama said. “One win is better than zero, but it’s worse than two.”

Wembanyama and the Spurs will look to bounce back Monday in Chicago, against a Bulls team that routed them 139-124 at the Frost Bank Center in early December.

Individually, Wembanyama’s first game as a 21-year-old was special enough. He became the 10th player in NBA history to log a 20-20 game on his birthday, and the first since Dwight Howard in 2017.

It was all part of a day that — despite the outcome of the game — Wembanyama said felt like a celebration.

“It feels good for sure to have everybody being kind, from the chef who saw me coming in and saying, ‘happy birthday,’ to the fans singing a little bit during warmups,” Wembanyama said. “Everybody is in a good mood, so it makes me in a good mood.”

By the end of overtime Saturday, Wembanyama’s mood had soured a bit.

He failed to score in the extra frame, going 0 of 2 from the 3-point arc. Overall, the Spurs missed 8 of 9 from the field in the final five minutes, losing by double digits in OT.

“We let this one get away,” point guard Chris Paul said.

The birthday boy agreed.

In assessing the Spurs’ back-to-back split against the Nuggets, Wembanyama hearkened back to something he had heard Paul preach earlier in the season.

“We’re not here to play good games, we’re here to win games,” Wembanyama said. “So we could get satisfied with saying, ‘Oh well we played them to overtime and we had a good one fellas.’ But that’s not what we want.”

Scoring woes weigh on CP3

For Paul, Saturday’s 2-point performance marked a fifth consecutive game failing to crack double digits in the scoring column.

The 39-year-old point guard has not posted a double-digit outing since going for 13 points in a Christmas Day loss at New York. In the back-to-back against Denver, he was a combined 4 of 20 from the field.

Though the Spurs did not acquire the 12-time All-Star needing him to produce points, Paul agrees his lack of scoring lately in concerning.

“I got to find my offense,” Paul said. “I couldn’t make a shot. I got to look at the rim more, be more aggressive.”

Sochan back in the lineup

The Spurs returned to full health in the second game against the Nuggets, which starting forward Jeremy Sochan returning from the injured list after a one-game absence.

Sochan missed the Spurs’ victory at Denver after tweaking his back in a New Year’s Eve win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

He was relatively quiet in his return, scoring five points with eight rebounds in 26 minutes.
