Wembanyama takes uppercut, plays chess in New York

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - DECEMBER 27: Chris Paul #3 of the San Antonio Spurs high fives Victor Wembanyama #1 during the first quarter against the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center on December 27, 2024 in New York City.

MINNEAPOLIS – Say this much for Victor Wembanyama: He knows how to take a punch.

Or, more accurately, a head butt.

The Spurs’ 20-year-old old superstar had a scare during Friday’s 96-87 brawl of a win at Brooklyn when the head of the Nets’ Jalen Wilson collided with Wembanyama’s chin as they battled for a rebound in the third quarter.

After remaining prone on the floor for several agonizing seconds with hands over face, Wembanyama eventually headed to the locker room, where he passed a concussion test and returned to the game.

“It was not a weird play or nothing,” he said. "It was not like a bad move, a cheap whatever. He just jumped and I happened to be hovering over him and just took the full force of the jump in my chin like an uppercut.”

Wembanyama played the entire fourth quarter and ended with 19 points and six blocks. He also swished 3 of 6 3-pointers, marking his 22nd consecutive game with at least one block and one three-ball, an NBA record.

Mitch Johnson, the Spurs’ acting coach, said he initially thought the shot that briefly took his star off the court was a typical, hard-nosed basketball play.

“I didn’t see anything at all,” Johnson said. “I actually thought he was just taking an extra breath on the ground. The game was pretty physical, going up and down. I actually didn’t think it was something for him to go to the locker room.”

Despite the strong finish in Brooklyn, there is reason to monitor Wembanyama’s condition heading into Sunday’s game at Minnesota.

Following Friday’s victory, Wembanyama struggled to answer reporters’ questions about plays that happened in the first half.

“I just realized the first half is a little blurry to me,” Wembanyama said. “I don’t know why. Because of the hit?”

For now, the team says Wembanyama has cleared concussion protocols barring unforeseen complications.

It should be noted Wembanyama was feeling sharp enough Saturday morning to challenge all comers to a game of chess in Washington Square Park before the Spurs departed New York.

Around 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning Wembanyama posted to X, “Who wants to meet me at the SW corner of Washington Square park to play chess? Im there.”

He played for more than an hour before posting a follow up suggestion for the NBA: “We need an NBA players only Chess tournament, proceeds go to the charity of choice of the winner.”

As for the head butt the night before effecting either of his games?

“It was a little weird, but I passed a concussion test,” Wembanyama said. “I was feeling OK after that, so I was ready."

Champagnie plays role of homecoming king

A season ago, Julian Champagnie’s return home was, well, nothing to write home about.

The Staten Island native missed all three shots he attempted in 16 minutes of last season’s 122-115 overtime loss at Brooklyn.

Champagnie was determined to put on a better showing in this season’s lone trip to the Barclays Center.

“This is home,” he said. “I’ve got to show something.”

Champagnie did just that, exploding for 10 of his 18 points in the opening moments of the second quarter to help the Spurs shake off a sluggish start and get into the game.

He buried 3 of 4 from 3-point range in the second quarter, including a 4-point play that included a flagrant foul when Brooklyn’s Tyrese Martin slid under his landing zone.

"Shots just fell,” Champagnie said. “I got the first one, and that’s the rhythm. Second one fell and after that it was kind of like, ‘All right, well, if they’re not going to guard, I’m going to shoot it.’ "

Paul’s free-throw streak halted

Spurs point guard Chris Paul began the season by making 42 consecutive free throws.

That streak ended Friday when Paul clanged the first of a pair of technical foul shots with 4:01 remaining.

Paul enters Sunday’s contest 43 of 44 from the foul line. His 97.7% clip would lead the NBA, except he does not have enough attempts to qualify.

Paul led the league in foul shooting once in his 20-year NBA career, hitting 93.4% in 2020-21 while with Phoenix.
