In wake of demotion, Collins takes a team-first approach
SAN ANTONIO, TX - DECEMBER 15: Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs sits on the bench along with injured players Zach Collins #27 and Keldon Johnson #0, wearing cowboy hat, during game against the Minnesota Timberwolves late in the second half at Frost Bank Center on December 15, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas.
NEW YORK – Wednesday’s 117-114 loss to the Knicks marked the fourth game in a row the Spurs’ Zach Collins has been active but hasn’t played.
Collins missed two games with a lower back injury in mid-December. When he returned for the game against Atlanta last Thursday, his job as Victor Wembanyama’s backup at center had been handed over to Charles Bassey.
Collins said he accepted the demotion and the healthy scratches without complaint.
“I want to win and for us to make the playoffs this year, so it’s all about winning and doing whatever in my capacity I can to help and be involved with that,” the seventh-year pro said.
Collins also said he knows things can change from game to game.
“I’ve said this since I’ve been here, I want to play 48 minutes a game,” said Collins, who is in his fourth season with the Spurs. “But right now it’s not my role, so my job is just to stay ready. I got to stay ready as a professional when my number is called. God forbid, somebody gets hurt, but the lineups change, somebody gets sick, whatever. Guys have to be ready. Not just me, but all the guys that haven’t been playing, we all got to be ready, so that’s where my mind’s at.”
With Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan fully recovered from injuries, acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson has shortened his rotation, leaving little playing time for Collins, forward Sandro Mamukelashvili and guards Blake Wesley and Malaki Branham.
Spurs forward Julian Champagnie, who has come off the bench the last three games after starting the first 26 while Vassell was either out with injuries or playing on a minutes restriction, praised Collins’ attitude.
“He’s a professional,” Champagnie said. “He’s a great teammate. He’s never dull in the locker room, never dull on the bench. he’s always clapping it up, always cheering, and we all know that when his named is called, he’ll be ready.”
Collins is averaging 5.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists in 14.2 minutes over 24 games.
Bassey, a fourth-year pro, is averaging 5.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.1 blocks in 11.0 minutes over 20 games. Over his past eight outings, Bassey is averaging 8.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 14.6 minutes and has posted two double-doubles in two of his last six appearances.
Johnson has praised Bassey several times recently for bringing “great energy” to the court.
“I’m just doing my job,” Bassey said. “I’m doing what I can do to help the team win. My first mindset is to help the team defensively.”
Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis (11) and San Antonio Spurs forward Zach Collins, center, scramble for a rebound during the first half of an NBA basketball game in San Antonio, Friday, Dec. 6, 2024.
Former Knicks staffer thriving in Austin
Johnson had plenty of praise for Austin Spurs coach Scott King when a New York reporter asked him about the Knicks’ former assistant director of player development.
The Spurs hired King this past summer after he spent five seasons with New York. The Austin Spurs are 10-6 under King.
“He’s done a great job,” Johnson said. “They’ve had a great start to their season. I know they just finished up the (G League) Winter Showcase. I think they were maybe one game out of making the Cup.”
Johnson said he got to know King during training camp and the preseason.
“He was very intimately involved during that stretch of almost two months, so I got to know him pretty well for that amount of time,” Johnson said. “He’s done a really good job, very impressive.”
Three of the Austin Spurs were with the Spurs for the first two games of this four-game trip: second-round rookie Harrison Ingram, undrafted rookie Riley Minix and fourth-year pro David Duke Jr. Each is on a two-way contract.
In 16 games, Ingram has averaged 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.2 steals. Minix has played in 16 contests, averaging 20.5 points and shooting 41.1% on 7.8 attempts from 3-point range. Through 15 games, Duke has averaged 16.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists.
“The game from college to the NBA is way different in spacing and there are a lot more ball screens, a faster pace, longer game, so just learning the ins and outs,” said Ingram, a North Carolina alumnus.
A sharpshooter at Morehead State last season, Minix said his efficient shooting from beyond the arc is nothing new.
“It’s just playing basketball,” he said. “I’ve been shooting it my whole life.”
