76ers fans showered the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama with boos

NEW YORK – Victor Wembanyama said he wasn’t bothered by the boos that rained down on him nearly every time he touched the ball for much of Monday night’s game at Philadelphia.

“I’ve seen much, much worse, so this is nothing,” the Spurs star said, referring to his days playing in Europe.

What was something was a bizarre second quarter in the Sixers’ 111-106 win that saw Joel Embiid get ejected after getting hit with two technical fouls and Wembanyama get embroiled in a flopping dispute.

With 8:13 left in the period, referee Jenna Schroeder ejected Andre Drummond for a charge against Wembanyama after hitting him with two technicals for arguing the decision. But after a video review, the officials rescinded the ejection and, instead, called an unsportsmanlike flop technical against Wembanyama.

Eventually, the technical against Wembanyama was also rescinded after the officials realized he had tripped.

“He just stepped on my foot…I just got tripped,” Wembanyama said. “I didn’t mean to fall. I didn’t expect the foul to even be called. I just fell.”

Crew chief Curtis Blair backed up Wembanyama’s explanation.

“After review it was determined that Drummond stepped on Wembanyama’s foot, and it was deemed incidental contact…Wemby tripped over Drummond’s foot,” Blair said via a pool report with a reporter after the game.

Wembanyama was also involved in the play that led to Embiid’s ejection. After the seven-time All-Star got whistled for a charge against Wembanyama, he picked up his first technical for disputing the call with Schroeder. She hit him with another tech and ejected him after he became enraged and slammed his protective face mask to the court and charged at her before his teammates and coaches restrained him.

Embiid exited with nine points in 14 minutes after torching the Spurs for a franchise-record 70 points in a Philadelphia win last January at the Wells Fargo Center.

After those officiating dust-ups, the rest of the game was a tight affair that Philadelphia pulled out in the crunch time after Tyrese Maxey nailed a pull-up 3-pointer contested by Jeremy Sochan with 30.5 seconds left to give the Sixers a 107-103 lead.

Maxey led Philadelphia (10-17) with 32 points. Wembanyama led the Spurs (15-14) with 26 points, nine rebounds, eight block and four assists.

But the biggest story was the officiating. Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was asked about Wembanyama getting accused of flopping, something he does not have a reputation for.

“There’s a lot going on,” Johnson said. “Teams are trying to be physical with him at times before the ball’s in play. He’s just trying to get to a spot and people are already pushing him and he should be allowed to get to a spot. So that’s a part of the conversation. And then there’s physicality once the play happens.”

Spurs point guard Chris Paul was blunt when asked for his reaction to the officiating.

“All this (expletive) is getting awful,” said Paul, who was ejected from a game at Portland two weeks ago for complaining about the officiating.

Block party continues on East Coast

After reviewing video of Wembanyama recording a career-best 10 blocks in the Spurs’ win over Portland on Saturday, Philadelphia coach Nick Nurse encouraged his players to sharpen their kick-out game.

“That’s really all you can do unless you want to get some blocked,” Nurse said. “Don’t challenge him. Don’t give him a chance to block that many.”

Nurse’s instructions apparently fell on deaf ears.

In Philadelphia, Wembanyama posted his fifth game this season with seven or more rejections and third in the last five outings. He leads the NBA with 4.0 blocks per game after posting a league-best 3.6 average as a rookie last season.

Several coaches have said they’ve told their players to proceed with caution when entering the paint.

Still, they keep coming, which is good news for the Spurs.

“Good luck going down there,” forward Julian Champagnie said. “I don’t really know what guys see, but I know we want them to do that. We want them to go down there. He’s blocking a lot of them, so just funneling guys that way and just kind of putting them into him is what we want to do.”

League honors Wembanyama

Wembanyama was named the Western Conference Player of the Week, the NBA announced Monday.

The 7-foot-3 Spurs center earned the honor for the first time in his career after averaging 36.0 points, 7.0 blocks, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting 52.5% from the field, 47.8% from 3-point range and 83.3% from the foul line.

With the 20-year-old Frenchman playing at such a high level, the Spurs went 2-0, earning an overtime victory over Atlanta before routing Portland.
