Collins taking team-first approach after demotion
SAN ANTONIO, TX - DECEMBER 15: Victor Wembanyama, far right, of the San Antonio Spurs sits on the bench along with injured players Zach Collins, far left, and Keldon Johnson, middle, during a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves late in the second half at Frost Bank Center on December 15, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas.
PHILADELPHIA - Monday night’s 111-106 loss to the Sixers marked the third game in a row the Spurs’ Zach Collins has been active but hasn’t played.
Collins missed two games with a lower back injury in mid-December. When he returned for the game against Atlanta last Thursday, his job as Victor Wembanyama’s backup at center had been handed over to Charles Bassey.
Collins said he accepted the demotion and the healthy scratches without complaint.
“I want to win and for us to make the playoffs this year, so it’s all about winning and doing whatever in my capacity I can to help and be involved with that,” the seventh-year pro said.
Collins also said he knows things can change from game to game.
“I’ve said this since I’ve been here, I want to play 48 minutes a game,” said Collins, who is in his fourth season with the Spurs. “But right now it’s not my role, so my job is just to stay ready. I got to stay ready as a professional when my number is called. God forbid, somebody gets hurt, but the lineups change, somebody gets sick, whatever. Guys have to be ready. Not just me, but all the guys that haven’t been playing, we all got to be ready, so that’s where my mind’s at.”
With Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan fully recovered from injuries, acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson has shortened his rotation, leaving little playing time for Collins, forward Sandro Mamukelashvili and guards Blake Wesley and Malaki Branham.
Spurs forward Julian Champagnie, who has come off the bench the last three games after starting the first 26 while Vassell was either out with injuries or playing on a minutes restriction, praised Collins’ attitude.
“He’s a professional,” Champagnie said. “He’s a great teammate. He’s never dull in the locker room, never dull on the bench. he’s always clapping it up, always cheering, and we all know that when his named is called, he’ll be ready.”
Collins is averaging 14.2 minutes, 5.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists in 14.2 minutes over 24 games.
Bassey, a fourth-year pro, is averaging 5.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.1 blocks in 11.0 minutes over 20 games. Over his past eight outings, Bassey is averaging 8.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 14.6 minutes and has posted two double-doubles in two of his last six appearances.
Johnson has praised Bassey several times recently for bringing “great energy” to the court.
“I’m just doing my job,” Bassey said. “I’m doing what I can do to help the team win. My first mindset is to help the team defensively.”
