3 takeaways as Spurs fall after Victor Wembanyama gets accused of flop

Image
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - DECEMBER 23: Andre Drummond #5 of the Philadelphia 76ers guards Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs during the first half at the Wells Fargo Center on December 23, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

PHILADELPHIA – Victor Wembanyama said he wasn’t bothered by Philadelphia fans booing him every time he touched the ball for most of the Sixers’ 111-106 win over the Spurs on Monday night.

“I’ve seen much, much worse, so this is nothing,” the Spurs star said, referring to his days playing in Europe.

What was something was a wild second quarter that saw Joel Embiid get ejected for picking up two technical fouls and Wembanyama get embroiled in a flopping dispute.

With 8:13 left in the period, referee Jenna Schroeder ejected Andre Drummond after he got hit with two technicals for arguing a charging foul he committed against Wembanyama. But after a video review, the officials rescinded the ejection and, instead, called an unsportsmanlike flop technical against Wembanyama.

Eventually, the technical against Wembanyama was also rescinded after the officials realized he had tripped.

“He just stepped on my foot…I just got tripped,” Wembanyama said. “I didn’t mean to fall. I didn’t expect the foul to even be called. I just fell.”

Crew chief Curtis Blair backed up Wembanyama’s explanation in a pool report after the game.

“After review it was determined that Drummond stepped on Wembanyama’s foot, and it was deemed incidental contact…Wemby tripped over Drummond’s foot,” Blair said.

Wembanyama was also involved in the play that led to Embiid’s ejection. After the seven-time All-Star got whistled for a charge against Wembanyama, he picked up his first technical for disputing the call with Schroeder. She hit him with another tech after he became enraged and slammed his protective face mask to the court.

Embiid exited with nine points in 14 minutes after torching the Spurs for a franchise-record 70-points in a Philadelphia win last January at the Wells Fargo Center.

After those dust-ups with the officials, the rest of the game was a tight affair that Philadelphia pulled out in the end after Tyrese Maxey nailed a pull-up 3-pointer contested by Jeremy Sochan with 30.5 seconds left to give the Sixers a 107-103 lead.

Maxey led Philadelphia (10-17) with 32 points. Paul George chipped in 19 and Guerschon Yabusele, who played with Wembanyama on the French national team at the Olympics this past summer, had 17.

Wembanyama led the Spurs (15-14) with 26 points, nine rebounds, eight block and four assists. The Spurs also got double-figure scoring from Stephon Castle (17), Julian Champagnie (15), Devin Vassell (15) and Chris Paul (12).

Paul also finished with eight assists.

Here are three takeaways from the first game of a four-game trip for the Spurs:

1, Flop-gate wasn’t much of a scandal

With Wembanyama attempting to play with what acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson called “more force,” expect to see more nights when he gets tangled up with opposing players like he did with Drummond.

But flopping has never been associated with Wembanyama, so officials are going to have to pay close attention to what happens in those situations, especially with Wembanyama having a type of frame that makes it easy for feet to become entangled.

“There’s a lot going on,” Johnson said. “Teams are trying to be physical with him at times before the ball’s in play. He’s just trying to get to a spot and people are already pushing him and he should be allowed to get to a spot. So that’s a part of the conversation. And then there’s physicality once the play happens. I actually think the one that was called a flop was because he just tripped over his foot. I don’t think it was a flop. So again, a lot going on.”

Spurs point guard Chris Paul was blunt when asked for his reaction to the officiating.

“All this (expletive) is getting awful,” said Paul, who was ejected from a game earlier this season for showing far less emotion than Embiid when arguing a call in Portland.

2, Players would be wise to listen to their coaches

After reviewing video of Wembanyama recording a career-best 10 blocks in the Spurs’ win over Portland on Saturday, Philadelphia coach Nick Nurse encouraged his players to sharpen their kick-out game.

“That’s really all you can do unless you want to get some blocked,” Nurse said. “Don’t challenge him. Don’t give him a chance to block that many.”

Nurse’s instructions apparently fell on deaf ears.

Wembanyama finished with eight blocks against the Sixers for his fifth game this season with seven or more rejections and third in the last five outings.

Nurse isn’t the only coach to warn their players about challenging Wembanyama. Chauncey Billups, Steve Kerr and others have also told their guys to proceed with caution when entering the paint.

Still, they keep coming, which is good news for the Spurs.

“Good luck going down there,” Champagnie said. " I don’t really know what guys see. I mean, I’m not on the opposing team, but I know that we want them to do that. We want them to go down there and let him challenge shots. He’s blocking a lot of them, so just funneling guys that way and just kind of putting them into him is what we want to do."

3, Collins takes unselfish approach to benching

Monday’s game marked the third in a row Zach Collins has been active but hasn’t played.

Collins missed two games with a lower back injury in mid-December. When he returned for the game against Atlanta last Thursday, his job as backup to Wembanyama had been handed over to Charles Bassey.

Collins said he accepted the demotion without complaint.

“I want to win and for us to make the playoffs this year, so it’s all about winning and doing whatever in my capacity I can to help and be involved with that,” the seventh-year pro said.

Collins also said he knows that things can change from game to game.

“I’ve said this since I’ve been here, I want to play 48 minutes a game,” Collins said. “But right now it’s not my role, so my job is just to stay ready. I got to stay ready as a professional when my number is called. God forbid, somebody gets hurt, but the lineups change, somebody gets sick, whatever. Guys have to be ready. Not just me, but all the guys that haven’t been playing, we all got to be ready, so that’s where my mind’s at.”
