However, one mark he reached on Dec. 15 is a bit shocking. Wemby reached 2,000 points in just 92 games, becoming the third player under 21 to get there the fastest in league history, with only Luka Doncic and Zion Williamson beating him to it, according to Spurs PR and must-follow Jordan Howenstine:

There’s a lot to unpack here. First, Zion is an absolute beast when he’s healthy, which makes the fact that he rarely is such a bummer. The man scored 27 points per game in his second season on 61 percent shooting. The league is missing out on a unique talent. Second, it’s shocking to see big names from the high school to the league era not on the list. It used to take a while for guys to get the touches to put up big numbers. Tracy McGrady, Amar’e Stoudamire, Kevin Garnett, and Kobe Bryant were not handed the reins out of the gate. One-and-done guys like Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant did put up big numbers as rookies but it took them a few more games than Wemby to get there.
Regardless of the context and the thin margins that created it, the rather arbitrary milestone is impressive because scoring is not Wemby’s best skill. Coming into the league, the forecast was that he’d make a bigger impact on the defensive end in his first couple of years, and it was correct. Wembanyama was one of the top three defenders in the NBA as a rookie and is the consensus top player on that end as a sophomore. So far, he’s putting up historic numbers for a player his age in blocks and rebounds. Luka Doncic is a superstar, but he makes his mark on one end of the floor. Wemby is a prodigy at both stopping buckets and getting them, at least going by the numbers.
There have been a lot of discussions about how Victor gets his points, and no one should compare him to offensive engines like Doncic or unstoppable forces like Zion. Not yet, at least. But a mark like this one, combined with his efficiency, should put a stop to any serious concern about Wembanyama’s future as a scorer. Even as he’s finding his way as a centerpiece, he’s logging historic numbers.
