The NBA slapped Spurs center Zach Collins with a $35,000 fine for directing an obscene gesture at a referee in Friday night’s 140-113 loss to Sacramento.
The incident occurred after Michael Smith ejected Collins with 9:07 left in the first half.
Collins picked up his first technical for disputing a personal foul called against him, his third of the game, that put Domantas Sabonis on the free throw line. After picking up a second technical, Collins raised his middle finger while walking off the court.
Collins’ loss of composure came after acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson tabbed him to start in place of Victor Wembanyama, who missed his second game with a sore lower back. The Spurs were also without Devin Vassell (injury managment) and Tre Jones (shoulder).
Asked for his reaction to Collins’ meltdown, Johnson said, “I didn’t see what was said. We just moved on and tried to hold the fort together with the group we had.”
Collins wasn’t available for comment after the game. He exited with two points and two rebounds.
