3 takeaways as Spurs lose to Kings without Victor Wembanyama

Image
Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis (11) drives to the basket against San Antonio Spurs center Charles Bassey (28) during the first half of an NBA basketball game in San Antonio, Friday, Dec. 6, 2024.

Julian Champagnie had a career night, and Chris Paul came within two rebounds of a triple-double.

But none of that mattered to the Spurs after they suffered through another embarrassing night on the defensive end of the court.

Four of Sacramento’s starters scored 22 or more points, including DeMar DeRozan with 23 against his former team, as the Kings slammed the short-handed Spurs 140-113 on Friday night to extend San Antonio’s losing streak to a season-worst three games.

“Thirty points is cool, but I wish we had won,” Champagnie said after pumping in a career-best 30 points on the strength of a career-high six 3-pointers. His previous career high was 26 against Sacramento on April 2, 2023.

Paul finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and 13 assists. He will enter Sunday’s game against New Orleans needing three assists to vault over Jason Kidd into second place on the NBA career chart.

But like Champagnie, the 39-year-old future Hall of Fame point guard was in no mood to celebrate his individual play, especially after the Spurs set a season high in points allowed for the second night in a row.

Chicago downed the Spurs 139-124 on Thursday night.

“Our defense has sort of been our staple all season long,” Paul said, referring to the Spurs entering the game ranked 13th in the league in opponents points per game (113.5).

“Regardless whether we win or lose, we’ve been able to get stops,” Paul continued. “So, giving up 140 tonight…That’s not really our identity.”

Here are three takeaways from the second game of a three-game homestand:

1. Collins losing his cool hurt Spurs

The Spurs came into the game shorthanded without Victor Wembanyama (back), Devin Vassell (injury management) and Tre Jones (shoulder). A loss of poise by Zach Collins depleted their ranks even more.

It started with referee Michael Smith whistling Collins for his third foul, which put Domantas Sabonis on the free throw line with 9:07 left in the first half. When Collins argued the call with a few choice words, Smith slapped him two technicals. On his way off the court, Collins made an obscene gesture toward Smith.

“I didn’t see what was said,” Johnson said. “We just moved on and tried to hold the fort together with the group we had.”

Image
SAN ANTONIO, TX - DECEMBER 6: Zach Collins #23 of the San Antonio Spurs is ejected during game against the Sacramento Kings in the first half at Frost Bank Center on December 6, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas.

The Kings led 43-40 after DeRozan sank the two free throws for the technical fouls and Sabonis sank his two freebies on his way to 22 points. Sacramento’s cushion soon ballooned to 12 points, and the Kings went into halftime up 69-59.

A case can be made the Collins wasn’t in the wrong to argue the call against him after Sabonis muscled his way into position down low, but he should have kept his emotions in check knowing an ejection would leave the team even more shorthanded.

Starting in place of Wembanyama after Johnson started Jeremy Sochan at center against the Bulls, Collins finished with two points and two rebounds in nine minutes. He wasn’t available for comment after the game.

2. Defensive woes go beyond Wembanyama’s absence

The Spurs had a ready excuse for their defensive collapse with Wembanayama, the league’s leading shot blocker, out the last two games. But Johnson wasn’t about to use it.

“We can clean up in all areas of transition defense, but our one-on-one defense has been probably the most disappointing,” Johnson said. “That has nothing to do with Victor. I know (not having) Victor will get a lot of discussion in this topic, but our one-on-one defense has been better and should be better and will be better.”

The Spurs have given up 30 or more points in their last eight quarters, a streak Johnson called “unacceptable.”

On the bright side, he said the defensive effort against the Kings was an upgrade from Thursday night’s loss.

“I do think the competitiveness and the effort was better,” Johnson said.

The Spurs were within nine points midway through the third quarter, but Sacramento led 100-86 entering the fourth, which the Kings won 40-27.

“It wasn’t like we went out there and just hung our heads and let them just run away with the game,” Champagnie said. “I felt like we stuck in there. We kept it pretty close for the most part.”

3. All Champagnie needed was confidence

Much like Derrick White at the start of his career with the Spurs, Champagnie was plagued by a lack of confidence.

But after the Spurs signed the St. John’s alumnus to a two-way deal in February 2023, he found a home where the coaching staff and his teammates were eager to make him believe in himself.

Impressed by his late-season audition, the Spurs signed Champagnie to a multi-year contract in July.

“The coaches have confidence in me, my teammates have confidence in me, it makes no sense for me to have no confidence,” he said after hitting 8 of 16 from the field against the Kings, including 6 of 12 from distance. “So I’m just going out there knowing I can shoot the basketball, knowing what I can do, what I’m capable of, and just living with the results. Some nights it’s going to be 6 for 12 and some nights it might be 1 for 8. But I’m just playing, having fun, playing hard.”

Champagnie has also benefited from having plenty of playmakers eager to get him the ball. It’s a list that includes Paul, rookie Stephon Castle and even Wembanyama.

“Just having guys like that on the team, it kind of makes my job a lot easier,” Champagnie said. “They know where I’m at, they know where I like the basketball, they know how I like to play, so it kind of just flows from there.”
