Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs Sacramento Kings
The Spurs look to snap their losing streak against the equally mercurial Kings
Ah, the losing streak. If winning is a great deodorant, as John Madden frequently declared, then a losing streak is undoubtedly odious. A single loss can be absorbed with relative class by any team or fan-base, but once they start to pile up, everyone has a way of piling on.
The insults start flying and the second-guessing ramps up a notch, all while the din of complaining and infighting gets louder and louder. Fortunately, this year’s Spurs team has only experienced three such streaks so far, each lasting no more than two games.
After a rough outing against an offensively explosive Chicago Bulls team (for all their faults, the Bulls are top 10 in both scoring and offensive rating), the Spurs are looking to keep their first three game losing streak of the season from happening against a team they’ve already beaten twice this season, in the Sacramento Kings.
The Kings are themselves a team that leans on their offensive strengths (also ranking in the top 10 for offensive rating), and both of San Antonio’s wins have come with Victor Wembanyama on the court.
Of course, the Spurs are always going to have a better chance at victory with Wembanyama on the court, but the Spurs have some serious backup big-man issues, and the Kings have a player in Domantas Sabonis who’s capable of a playing 40 minutes a night and embarrassing the rest of San Antonio’s bigs.
With the Spurs last victory over the Kings coming by just two points, Wembanyama’s presence (and on-court stamina) will likely be a key match-up in this one.
Of course, if the Kings shoot 58% from the field, and 46% from long-distance like the Bulls did last night, it might not end up mattering at all.

What to watch for
Jeremy Sochan - Small Ball Maestro?
In addition to Wembanyama’s looming availability status, it appears the Spurs are interested in exploring Sochan’s potential in small-ball lineups. In a night where Bassey and Mamu could have seen more minutes, Sochan ending up getting the start at the 5, and tallied a 16/14 double-double in the process. The Spurs have toyed with the idea in the past, but a certain lack of ceiling from San Antonio’s backup bigs seems to have spurred (pun intended) them into taking a longer look at it. In addition to his defensive merits, Sochan is a master of the kind of dirty-work that big men need to do to excel in San Antonio’s offense when they happen to not be Wemby. He’s also a rapidly improving passer and fierce rebounder (arguably the best on the team), which allows him to make up for his deficits in height and rim-protection. The real question is whether or not the Spurs will continue to use him in this capacity once Wembanyama returns, and what his limitations are until Wemby’s back is feeling better.
