Research on last season reveals Wemby’s popularity throughout the league
We all love our sports heroes. In fact, NBA jerseys are one of the most popular items of sports apparel. According to Statista, we spent over $288 million last year.
Yardbarker, a digital media property focused on the publishing of sports and entertainment news and information, researched Google searches to see which NBA jerseys are the most in demand.
The methodology to their research reported:
“Using keywordtool.io, we analyzed mentions and searches online over the last 12 months of NBA jerseys to see which are the most in demand. The higher number of searches and mentions ranked the team or player higher in our list.”
The San Antonio Spurshad the 11th most popular jersey with 121,530 searches in the last year. Not bad for that “boring” small market team.
Individually, some of the usual suspects have their number searched the most.
Karl-Anthony Towns, after being traded to New York, was the most popular jersey search with over 700,000 online mentions. Kristaps Porzingis, Stephen Curry, LeBron James, and Anthony Edwards rounded out the top five.
Our own Victor Wembanyama was 13th overall.
Yet many of the league’s best players did not make the Top 20. When it came to interest in jerseys, MVP winners James Harden, Nikola Jokić and Giannis Antetokounmpo rank 21st, 24th and 28th respectively. Surprisingly, Joel Embiid ranked 37th.
Glean what you will, but the Spurs ranking 11th is recognition on a grander scale. While Wemby ranking high should come as no surprise, it is still nice to see how his impact is acknowledged.
It might be interesting to know how these numbers would alter on a global level.
