3 Takeaways as the Spurs ride Wemby’s triple-double to victory

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - DECEMBER 01: Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs reacts after making a basket against the Sacramento Kings in the first half at Golden 1 Center on December 01, 2024 in Sacramento, California.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – For Spurs forward Harrison Barnes, Sunday afternoon began with an unfamiliar feeling.

For the first time in a long time, Barnes walked into the Golden1 Center hoping to prevent the Kings from “lighting the beam.”

A member of the Kings from 2018 through the end of last season, Barnes knows well the club’s tradition of blazing the Sacramento night sky on the nights the home team is victorious.

“Man, it’s a lot of love,” Barnes said. “From the very first time I came to Sacramento, the fans always showed love.”

Victor Wembanyama and a cast of 3-point sharpshooters made sure the Spurs sent Kings fans home unhappy Sunday, authoring a comeback from 17 points down to grab a 127-125 victory.

Wembanyama posted his third career triple-double with 34 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists and the Spurs set a franchise record with 24 3-pointers.

Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson combined for 38 of the Spurs’ 45 bench points, with Vassell scoring 21 and Johnson netting 17.

The Spurs also got 19 points from Julian Champagnie.

“It felt like we were sleepwalking a little bit at the start of the game,” said Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson, whose team trailed 42-28 after the first quarter. “We could have done a better job of making them work for some stuff. I think we picked it up there in the second half and fourth quarter, and it was a big difference.”

DeMar DeRozan had 28 points to lead the Kings, who had two other players eclipse 20. Domantas Sabonis had 25 points to go with 13 rebounds, while De’Aaron Fox added 23 points and nine assists.

The Spurs came back behind Wembanyama and a barrage of 3-pointers to improve to 11-9.

Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s win in Sacramento:

1. Why the Spurs keep burying the Kings from deep

Sacramento’s defensive strategy to load up in the paint gave the Spurs an opportunity to beat them from the 3-point stripe.

All the Spurs had to do was take advantage of it.

It was one thing the Spurs did well throughout the game, making half of their 46 attempts from distance.

“Sacramento does a great job of packing the paint, showing heavy shifts, rotating,” Johnson said. “We did feel if we spaced the right way and moved the ball, we’d be able to have some inside-out rhythm threes.”

That approach provided the Spurs with only eight paint points in the first half, an outcome Johnson did not enjoy even as 13 3-pointers went in.

“There needs to be a balance,” Johnson said. “I thought we did a better job in the second half getting to the free-throw line, being aggressive.”

Meanwhile, the 3-pointers never stopped falling.

Wembanyama made five of his nine attempts. Vassell made five of his eight. Champagnie was 4 of 9.

In all, seven Spurs made at least one 3-pointer. Six made multiple.

When Chris Paul sank a top-of-the-arc 3-pointer to put the Spurs ahead 124-119 with 20.5 seconds left, it was a new club record.

Before Sunday, the Spurs had made 22 3-pointers in a game on two occasions. The most recent? Twenty days earlier, in a home victory over these same Kings.

2. A tale of two Sacramento trips

The last time the Spurs were in the Golden1 Center, they also faced a tight game in the fourth quarter.

That one did not go well.

The Spurs blew a three-point lead in the final 20 seconds of that game to lose 131-129 last March. The key moment in that game came when Sabonis ripped the ball from Malaki Branham at midcourt and scampered for the winning dunk.

Nine months later, it was the Spurs who were the fourth-quarter Kings.

“It shows a lot of progression,” Wembanyama said. “But it also shows how close our demons are, our bad habits. So we’ve got to keep pushing.”

The growth is measurable.

Last season, the Spurs were 13-28 in crunch time game. So far this season, they are 5-3.

Sunday, they stared down DeRozan and Fox – two of the NBA’s top fourth-quarter players – and lived to tell the tale.

DeRozan scored 10 straight Sacramento points in the fourth, and seemed on the verge of taking the game over. The Spurs got him stopped.

“There’s a maturation that happens just naturally,” Johnson said. “You start to see patterns over and over. You get in the same situation and hopefully you learn from the past or you just gain confidence in that situation.”

3. So much for full health

The Spurs have yet to play a game this season with an entirely healthy roster. Tuesday in Phoenix was supposed to be the day.

Then Tre Jones got his left shoulder pinned fighting through a Sabonis screen in the fourth quarter Sunday, and those plans went kaput.

Jones left the Golden1 Center with his left arm in a sling, with X-rays showing a sprained shoulder.

That was considered good news. Jones initially feared a dislocation or something worse.

“It did not feel good,” Jones said.

There is no timetable for Jones’ return, but it is clear Jones will not play in Phoenix, the day Jeremy Sochan was expected to return from his fractured thumb.

“It’s crazy,” Jones said, shaking his head. “We were so close.”
