Devin Vassell maintained positive attitude while dealing with injuries
San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) makes a jump shot during the first half against the Washington Wizards at Frost Bank Center on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs defeated the Wizards, 139-130.
Devin Vassell has stayed strong mentally, even while struggling to maintain his physical well-being.
With the rare foot injury that cost him eight games late last season, the surgery he underwent in June to fix it and a bruised knee that sidelined him for the past couple of weeks, it’s been a star-crossed year so far for the fifth-year guard.
But he’s fought back from all of it while maintaining perspective in the face of the adversity.
“I’m trying to look at everything in a positive way,” he said. “I feel like everything happens for a reason. Obviously, I can get upset and get frustrated, but what’s that going to do for me?”
Vassell showed little rust on the offensive end Wednesday night in his return from a five-game absence due to his knee injury, scoring 14 points in 21 minutes off the bench in the Spurs’ 119-101 loss to the Lakers.
Vassell connected on 5 of 10 from the field, including 2 for 3 from 3-point range to become the first player in franchise history to make 450 3-pointers in his first 250 career games.
“He looked good,” Spurs interim coach Mitch Johnson said. “We know Devin’s going to be able to score and help us out and continue to find his rhythm, and it’s nice to have him on the court. We just need to continue to build him back into the fabric of the team. I don’t think it’ll take long.”
Vassell, who missed the first nine game of the season due to his offseason surgery, said there is plenty of time left for him to turn his season around. Limited to just five games this season, he’s averaging 15.8 points while shooting 40% on 6.0 attempts per game from 3-point territory.
Vassell finished second on the team in scoring last season with a career-high 19.5 average while shooting 37.2% from distance on 6.6 attempts.
“I feel like I’ll catch my stride at the perfect time,” he said. “It’s still early for us, and as I keep playing, start playing a lot more, I’ll start catching the flow, catching my rhythm a lot better. And I’m excited for us to get Jeremy (Sochan) back (soon from thumb surgery). I’m excited for us to have our … what is our starting five even going to look like? We haven’t even played with it. So, I’m excited for that.”
Victor Wembanyama, who had 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in the loss to the Lakers, shares Vassell’s excitement.
“Feels good to have him back,” the star center said. “I’m looking forward to expanding our game even more once he gets all his minutes back. He opens up our floor offensively.”
Holiday kicks off three-day break
The Spurs have mixed feelings about their three-day break, which began Thursday.
Wembanyama, for one, said waiting to play again until Sunday at Sacramento is too long of a respite.
“One day of rest is good, but three days, I don’t know,” the 20-year-old Frenchman said. “I feel like when I put my body through tough conditions, it is going to respond proportionately. But if we take it too easy, we have to practice hard.”
After spending Thanksgiving with their families, the Spurs are set to practice on Friday.
“You don’t get it (rest) much during the season, so you should take advantage of it,” Johnson said. “Obviously, we’re coming off of a back-to-back road to home and we’re starting to hopefully get a little healthier, so I’ll tell you in a week or two if it’s a good thing. But it feels like it’s OK right now.”
