Spurs’ Stephon Castle gets better of Warriors’ Stephon Curry
Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30) stares down San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) as he brings the ball up court during the first half of their NBA game at the Frost Bank Center on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024 in San Antonio. The Spurs beat the Warriors 104-94.
SALT LAKE CITY – For years, Chris Paul knew anytime he faced the Golden State Warriors it would make for quite a workout.
On his previous teams, Paul was often assigned the difficult task of following Stephen Curry through an obstacle course of screens all night.
Now 39, Paul was glad to pass that task to a pair of young legs when the Warriors visited San Antonio over the weekend.
Welcome to the NBA, Stephon Castle.
“I told him for years I used to guard Steph, chase him around in the playoffs and all that,” Paul said. “I just tried to give him little pointers or whatnot.”
The NBA’s fourth overall draft pick proved up to the task in the Spurs’ 104-94 victory over Golden State on Saturday.
The 20-year-old Castle was part of a Spurs defensive effort that limited Curry to 14 points on 5 of 16 shooting, his worst percentage of the season.
Most impressive, Curry managed to only squeeze off three attempts with Castle as his primary defender, making one.
“In this league now, there’s not a lot of guys that play both ways,” Paul said. “That’s why with Steph being a rook, I just love that he ain’t ducking nothing.”
Throughout his rookie season, which continues Tuesday against Utah in Salt Lake City, Castle has often been called upon to guard the opposing team’s best player.
Against, the Warriors that meant Curry.
The 10-time All-Star and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player provided a different sort of challenge.
Curry never stops moving. Ever.
It was something Castle noticed in his film study leading to Saturday’s game.
“The play doesn’t start until he passes it,” Castle said. “Just being able to chase him around all those screens, it is hard to do.”
In the battle of Stephs, the Spurs’ version got the better of the Warriors’ version this time.
While Curry had trouble finding clean looks, Castle ended with 19 points as the Spurs won their third game in a row.
The nightly draw of a murderer’s row of defensive assignments pleases Castle, who filled a similar role in his lone college season at Connecticut.
“It’s something that I’ve asked for,” Castle said. “I feel like that was part of the reason they drafted me to come here.”
The Spurs will gladly grant Castle his wish to take on all comers. Nobody is happier about that development than Paul.
Asked if he appreciated not having to bird dog the likes of Curry for four quarters anymore thanks to Castle, Paul grinned.
“Absolutely,” he said.
Danny Green to make Spurs TV debut
With Spurs TV analyst Sean Elliott set to receive a night off Tuesday, former Spurs guard Danny Green is set to make his in-game commentating debut at Utah.
Green is expected to call the game alongside play-by-play voice Jacob Tobey.
The 37-year-old Green announced his retirement from playing last month after 15 seasons. He spent eight of them in San Antonio, where he helped the Spurs win a championship in 2014.
Green went on to win additional titles in Toronto and with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Mamu bemoans SA traffic
In all likelihood, forward Sandro Mamukelashvili will not be around to enjoy the hypothetical new arena the Spurs and the city of San Antonio have pitched to open downtown by 2032.
Still, Mamukelashvili gives the project his unabashed support if it reduces the commute to work for the next generation of Spurs players.
“The traffic is real,” Mamukelashvili said. “The other day I was coming to the gym for 53 minutes. I was almost about to get on the grass and go, but you can’t do that.”
The snarl of San Antonio traffic has made Mamukelashvili want to explore other ways to get to work. He has already ruled out one option.
“I’m scared of helicopters, so I definitely wouldn’t get in one,” Mamukelashvili said. “Maybe like a jet pack or something.”
