The final horn sounded on the Spurs’ shorthanded 110-104 victory over Oklahoma City on Tuesday, and players strode off a funny-looking court at the Frost Bank Center and into an unfamiliar feeling.

For the first time, the Spurs have won a game in the Emirates NBA Cup tournament.

And yes, that actually means something to them.

“Hell yeah,” center Zach Collins said. “We’re trying to get to Vegas.”

Las Vegas is the site of the knockout round of the tournament, which features the eight teams who survive group play.

Collins has an ulterior motive for wanting the Spurs to get there: Las Vegas is his hometown.

“The goal is to get to the playoffs at the end of the year,” Collins said. “The NBA Cup adds a little bit more. We definitely want to do it.”

Playing without stars Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell, the Spurs won Tuesday to improve to 1-1 in group play.

They were 0-4 last season, joining Memphis as the two teams to go winless.

The Spurs finally got in the NBA Cup win column thanks to 22 points from Keldon Johnson and a season-best 20 from Harrison Barnes.

Johnson matched a career high with six 3-pointers. He curiously scored only one two-point goal, a driving dunk in the first half.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points to lead the Thunder, who were playing their fifth game without 7-foot-1 center Chet Holmgren, a loss that forced them to play small from start to finish.

Jalen Williams added 27 points for OKC.

The Thunder, who won their first three games after Holmgren fractured his hip, have lost two in a row. At 11-4, OKC has slipped behind Golden State for supremacy in the Western Conference.

Chris Paul contributed 14 points and 11 assists for the Spurs, who led by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter but had to hold on for dear life down the stretch.

The Spurs will take the victory, which keeps them alive in NBA Cup play. Their next group play contest is scheduled for Nov. 26 at Utah.

Here are three takeaways from Tuesday’s solid victory over the Thunder, which improved the Spurs to 7-8:

1. The Spurs won without doing everything right

This is perhaps a positive sign of progress. The Spurs were able to pocket one of their more impressive victories of the season without accomplishing all of the little things that often tend to add up to wins.

The Spurs turned the ball over 20 times against OKC’s voracious defense, giving way to 18 points for the Thunder.

They missed six of their 19 free-throw attempts, leaving points on the table in a tight game.

The Spurs did not always use their size advantage to much of an advantage, getting out-rebounded 47-45 and giving up 13 offensive boards to Oklahoma City.

They won mostly by burying 19 of their 46 3-point attempts, which can usually erase a lot of ills.

In the end, the Spurs’ perseverance was the best part of the night.

2. Castle keeps finding ways to make impact

In many ways, Tuesday’s game was one of the roughest of rookie Stephon Castle’s fledgling NBA career.

He committed a season-high six turnovers, more than he coughed up in the previous three games combined. He missed 10 of his 13 attempts, and was 1 of 7 from the 3-point stripe.

And yet, acting coach Mitch Johnson let Castle stay on the floor as part of the Spurs’ closing lineup.

The idea was simple.

“There’s no way to get experience without experience,” Johnson said.

Castle’s ability to move on from bad moments is one of the underrated parts of his game. He did it again Tuesday, shrugging off an otherwise shaky outing to make a pair of huge plays down the stretch.

One came in the middle of the fourth quarter, with OKC surging and the Spurs’ struggling to score. Castle stepped up and buried a 3-pointer to push the Spurs’ lead to 103-88 with 6:06 remaining.

Later, with the Thunder within six in the waning moments, Castle chased down Gilgeous-Alexander for a block at the rim.

“He made great plays,” Johnson said.

Had Castle not been on the floor, he wouldn’t have made them.

3. Bassey has his bounce back

It’s worth debating whether Tuesday marked backup center Charles Bassey’s best game in the NBA. It was certainly his best game in a while.

Having missed the second half of last season after tearing an ACL, Bassey reminded the Spurs of the high energy he can bring when he is right.

“If I don’t bring the energy, who will?” Bassey said.

With Wembanyama on the shelf and Collins in the starting five, Bassey has been given ample minutes to shine lately.

In Saturday’s loss in Dallas, Bassey logged 22 minutes and went without scoring or making any sort of lasting impact on the game.

Against an undersized OKC lineup, Bassey made his presence known while looking fully recovered from his knee injury.

His 12 points were more than he had totaled the rest of the season combined (eight). Bassey also grabbed eight rebounds, recorded a pair of blocks and generally played with a level of enthusiasm the rest of the Spurs found infectious.
