Victor Wembanyama hit his first two 3-pointers Wednesday night against the Washington Wizards.
It was a sign of things to come.
Wembanyama scored a career high 50 points off a career high eight 3-pointers and led the Spurs to a 139-130 win over the Wizards on Wednesday night at the Frost Bank Center.
With 6:51 remaining in the third quarter, Jordan Poole – who led the Wizards with 42 points – connected on all three of his free-throw attempts to tie the game, 85-85.
Wembanyama answered with a 3 and the Wizards never fully recovered. Over the next six minutes, the Spurs ripped off a 23-2 run, taking a commanding 108-87 lead with 47.1 seconds left in the quarter.
The only question left was how many points Wembanyama would score.
The answer? A lot.
Wembanyama drove to the bucket for a layup, hit an 18-foot jumper and added a few free throws to the mix in the fourth quarter in his pursuit of half-a-hundred points.
He finished 18 of 29 from the floor and 8 of 16 from 3-point range. The last Spur to score 50 points in a game was LaMarcus Aldridge in 2019.
The Wizards did cut the once 21-point lead to 129-121 with 2:17 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Chris Paul drilled a step-back 17-footer and hit a driving layup to all but finish off the Wizards.
Alexandre Sarr, the big Frenchman who the Wizards drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft scored 12 points. Fellow countryman Bilal Coulibaly had six.
With Wembanyama scoring at will, the Spurs didn’t need much other scoring, but Blake Wesley had 10 off the bench and Devin Vassell added 17.
Paul, of course, led the Spurs with 11 assists.
Wembanyama chipped in six rebounds, three blocks and two assists in the win, which brought the Spurs back to .500 at 6-6. They host the L.A. Lakers on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
The Wizards dropped to a dismal 2-8 with the loss.
