Over the last few days, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has been missing from the sideline as he tends to an undisclosed illness.
That didn’t stop former San Antonio Spurs forward Dennis Rodman from sharing some musings from hisn time in San Antonio between 1993-1995.
“The biggest problem in San Antonio was Gregg Popovich, the general manager. He wanted to be the coach too and was constantly around the team, telling the then-coach Bob Hill what to do. If Hill didn’t listen, there would be disagreements, and Hill would take it out on the players. I didn’t have issues with Hill, except during the playoffs. Popovich also used him, just as he used me. “
“Gregg wanted to be the coach who could tame meand used Hill for the ‘dirty work’ - that was Popovich’s big challenge. He wanted to turn me into an obedient, humble soldier. He didn’t consider anything else, that was his goal. When that didn’t work, he badmouthed me around, and I was traded for practically nothing, under the pretense that it was for the good of the team.”
While Rodman is known for not mincing his words while also not being entirely correct, the one piece of his quote about being traded for “the good of the team” does seem to fall in line with Pop’s methodology.
The rest sounds like it could only be verified by another involved or a witness to the accusations, and no one has spoken up, prior to or since Dennis’ comments.
