3 takeaways as Vassell has strong outing in return

Image
San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) passes the ball past Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, center, and forward John Collins during the second half of their NBA game at the Frost Bank Center on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024. Utah beat the Spurs 111-110.

Spurs interim head coach Mitch Johnson suggested before Saturday’s game that Devin Vassell likely wouldn’t have an eye-popping stat line in his season debut.

“I am sure he won’t score his career high tonight,” Johnson said after explaining the guard’s minutes would be capped.

Johnson was right. Vassell didn’t top the 36 points he produced in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers last December.

But he might have come close had his playing time not been restricted in his first game back since suffering a foot injury that cost him the last eight games of last season and the first nine this year after undergoing surgery in June.

Vassell scored 21 points in 22 minutes off the bench in his return, but it didn’t prevent the Spurs from falling 111-110 to Utah in a rare afternoon game at the Frost Bank Center.

The Spurs (4-6) also wasted strong outings by Victor Wembanyama, who finished with 24 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks, and rookie Stephon Castle, who had a season-high 23 points.

“It was good for me to be back out there,” Vassell said. “Good for me to be playing with some of these guys. But ultimately I wanted to get that win, so I’m kind of upset about that right now.”

Playing in his first game since March 29, Vassell checked in with 5:35 left in the first quarter. He missed his first two shots before sinking a pull-up mid-range jumper over Lauri Markkanen with 7:40 left in the first half.

Vassell, who finished last season as the club’s second-leading scorer with 19.5 points per game, was 8 for 13, including 3 for 6 from 3-point range.

Johnson wasn’t surprised that Vassell showed little rust.

“He’s put in almost seven months constant work, so that’s a credit to him and a credit to our medical staff, credit to the support staff,” Johnson said.“He’s been playing live a good amount.”

In a game that featured 16 lead changes and 15 ties, the Jazz (2-7) avenged their Halloween night loss to the Spurs in Salt Lake City by hitting 6 of 7 free throws in the final 11.8 seconds.

Leading 107-104, the Jazz gained breathing room when Wembanyama committed an offensive foul by running into Jordan Clarkson with 10.1 seconds left. The Spurs challenged the call, but the review upheld it.

Wembanyama’s foul gave him six turnovers for the game. As a team, the Spurs committed 20, which led to 27 points for the Jazz.

After Clarkson sank two free throws with 8.9 seconds left, Julian Champagnie hit a 3 to pull the Spurs within 109-107. Forced to foul Collin Sexton, the Spurs fell behind four points after he sank two more freebies with 3.9 second left.

Vassell accounted for the final score with a 3 at the buzzer.

Sexton led Utah with 23 points. Markkanen chipped in 20.

Here are three takeaways from the second game of a five-game homestand:

1. Wembanyama’s perimeter barrage bolstered by career night

During his pre-game press conference, Johnson endorsed Wembanyama’s desire to let 'em fly from 3-point range after the coach was asked about the 7-foot-3 center’s 3-point frequency spiking.

Wembanyama entered the game with 44.9% of his field goal attempts coming from beyond the arc after 33.2% of his shots from the field came from deep last season.

“He is a very, very good shooter, and I think we want him to take the appropriate 3-pointers whenever he has the opportunity to,” Johnson said. “And he has been doing that and hopefully he will continue to.”

On cue, Wembanyama came out firing away from the perimeter, going 2 for 5 in the first quarter. For the game, he hit a career-high 6 of 9 (66.6%) from downtown.

Asked if he thought he had turned a corner with his 3-point stroke after he entered the game shooting just 22.6% from 3-point territory on 6.9 attempts per outing, Wembanyama said, “I don’t think there’s really a corner to be turned. It’s not how progression goes. I’m not going to be shooting 66% in my career, but I’m also not going to be shooting 25%. … We don’t want to overreact one way or the other. It’s just how a career goes. And I’m very young.”

Still, such an efficient night from downtown is a good sign if Wembanyama is determined to attempt so many shots from 3-point range.

2. Castle gains valuable experience with crunch time minutes

The fourth overall pick was on the floor for all but one minute in the fourth, some valuable playing time that will undoubtedly pay off later in the season in crunch time situations.

“Definitely appreciative to be out there,” he said. “That just shows the trust the coaching staff has in me.”

Castle scored a team-high 10 points in the fourth on the strength of 3-for-6 shooting from the field and 4 for 4 from the free throw line, but he said he was focused primarily on getting stops.

“I feel like defense in those moments is what is most important,” he said. “But definitely appreciative to be out there in those moments. It shows a lot of trust.”

3. It shouldn’t take long for Vassell to start again

Given Vassell’s strong performance right out of the gate, it would be no surprise if he returns to the starting lineup soon.

“He was probably even better than we expected,” Wembanyama said. “His rhythm and shot making were there in his first game back, so it was pretty impressive and I think he’s totally on the right track. I don’t know that we can expect more from a guy coming back after so long.”

Asked if there is a target date for him to start again, Vassell said, “Coach’s question…If I could play 37 minutes right now, I would play it. But you know how that goes.”
