Vassell to make his season debut against Utah
San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell signs autographs for fans prior to the start of their NBA home opener with the Houston Rockets at the Frost Bank Center on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024. The Spurs beat the Rockets 109-106.
Devin Vassell will make his season debut against Utah on Saturday night, the club has announced.
Interim coach Mitch Johnson told reporters about 90 minutes before tipoff that Vassell was a “go” for the game.
Vassell, who finished last season as the Spurs’ second leading scorer with a career-best points per game average of 19.5, has been inactive since undergoing foot surgery in June. He last played on March 29, scoring 23 points in a win over the New York Knicks. After that, he missed the final eight games of the season due to his injured foot.
“He will come off the bench,” Johnson said of Vassell’s role Saturday night. "He will be on a minutes’ restriction. It is his first game since April, so it’s been seven months and he has done a heck of a job with rehab, his approach, putting in the work. It’s a long deal. We have had a couple of guys – Charles Bassey (recovery from knee surgery) did it and now Devin, and those guys put in a lot of work that people don’t see. Extremely happy for him and excited for him.
“I am sure he won’t score his career high tonight, but we are very happy to have him back on the court and I am sure he is going to help us moving forward.”
The Spurs also announced that guard Malaki Branham will miss Saturday’s game due to a right ankle sprain.
