Revisiting the Wembanyama vs. Holmgren discussion
Last week, I posited that watching Victor Wembanyama spar with Dillon Brooks could make for a more interesting matchup than Chet Holmgren.
Two nights later, as the Spurs faced the Oklahoma City Thunder, Sean Elliott stated that Wemby/Holmgren is the most anticipated facing off of two rookies since Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.
Then this graphic posted:
Wemby had just come off his worst scoring game on October 30th against the Thunder, which not only made Holmgren look stronger, but posed the question for casual observers as to whether Holmgren is, in fact, the better player.
But as we all know, the game of basketball moves fast, and things can change in a heartbeat.
In his next game on November 1st, Holmgren tallied a season low six-point game (matching Victor’s) against the Portland Trail Blazers, leading to this graphic:
So obviously, this is the comparison that pundits and fans have latched onto, probably for years to come. And with OKC making a run into last year’s NBA Playoffs while the Spurs were distantly outside of the postseason, the race for a trophy may be a factor over the long run.
Two night’s ago, the Spurs found themselves in Inglewood playing the Los Angeles Clippers in their new Intuit Dome. Zubac, the longest tenured member of the Clips and one of the league’s top rebounders, gave Victor Wembanyama a different challenge.
Zubac’s frame, strength, and basketball IQ quickly indoctrinated Wemby into how to adjust for a player of his caliber. Victor ended the night with nine blocks.
Over time, I believe Wemby will show that he not only continues to define how people play against him -adjusting shots and extra passes to avoid blocks- but how he plays against other players. Each game is a snippet into Victor’s mindset, and fans observe his growth in real time.
After Wemby’s six-point outing, Kendrick Perkins shared:
“The greatest draft prospect since LeBron James. The guy that was supposed to go to San Antonio and save the organization… He’s not on the verge of this season of showing that, and he’s struggling… I would rather you get away from wanting to be Kevin Durant and start being more like a Giannis Antetokounmpo.”
Perkins’ take is limiting and short-sighted. Why can’t Wemby emulate the best of both players?
Wembanyama has already shown he can play in the paint and move like Antetokounmpo, especially with Chris Paul lobbing to him at the rim. But Victor is taking outside threes that are all but unblockable.
Last season, Victor shot 32.5% of his 5.5 attempts from beyond the arc. This season, he’s upped his attempts to 7.1, but he’s only hitting at an abysmal 22%.
This is what Wemby is working on right now.
He’s looking for his shot and erring on the side of taking more. When defenders close out on him, we’ll see his assists go up. If he can make that long-distance three work for him, he’ll leave comparison’s to Kevin Durant in the dust.
I guess it doesn’t matter who Victor is facing off against, it is how he handles the minutes between tip off and final buzzer.
