(Victor Wembanyama)

(Chris Paul)

(Julian Champagnie)

(Harrison Barnes)

(Jeremy Sochan)

(Keldon Johnson)

(Stephon Castle)

(Malaki Branham)

(Zach Collins)

(Sandro Mamukelashvili)

(Mitch Johnson)

Grades: San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers – Game #7

After notching their best win of the season on Saturday versus the Minnesota Timberwolves, the San Antonio Spurs followed that up with their most frustrating loss of the season tonight against the Los Angeles Clippers. When the dust settled, the Clippers had a 113-104 victory.

Early on, things couldn’t have looked much better for the Spurs. San Antonio led 40-14 after the first quarter and appeared ready to waltz to a win. Regrettably, that didn’t happen. The offense for the Spurs started sputtering and the Clippers caught fire from three-point land.

After scoring 40 points in the first 12 minutes, the Spurs would score only 64 points the rest of the way. In the fourth period, the good guys were outscored 31-18 and the collapse was complete

Spurs at Clippers – Final Grades

Victor Wembanyama

The good: Wembanyama was an absolute defensive terror in the paint. He finished with nine blocks and made life very difficult for the Clippers close to the basket. Wembanyama was very good on the boards, passed the ball well and limited his sloppiness. The bad: Wembanyama didn’t shoot it well from the perimeter. To make matters worse, he struggled to score when guarded by players a foot shorter than him. That has to change. Defensively, he had some mistakes out on the perimeter. Overall: He was a block away from a triple-double but the super sophomore not being able to exploit mismatches on offense was holding the team back.

Grade: B

Chris Paul

Paul was pretty darn good again. He finished with 14 points and ten assists. Early on, his passing was flawless. He was picking apart the Clippers with his precision. Paul also did a good job of looking to score in order to keep the defense honest. Unfortunately, his playmaking got worse as the game progressed. By the fourth quarter, Paul was uncharacteristically missing open teammates. In retrospect, the Spurs probably had him carry too much of the load on this night.

Grade: B+

Julian Champagnie

Champagnie busted out of his shooting slump in the first quarter. He went 3-for-3 from deep to help power San Antonio’s fantastic opening frame. Champagnie kept shooting as the game wore on and produced at a reasonable rate. Sadly, his defense was ugly to watch. He was reaching too much and looked heavy-footed going against the isolation players on the Clippers.

Grade: B

Harrison Barnes

Barnes played 38 minutes but didn’t do a whole lot. He had a couple good passes, a couple good rebounds but that was about it. He had one made basket and his defense was nothing to write home about. Barnes’ rotations were okay on defense but he was rarely called upon to do any of the heavy lifting on that end.

Grade: C-

Jeremy Sochan

Sochan was forced to leave the game due to a thumb injury. Hopefully Sochan doesn’t have to miss any games because he is off to a strong start. Against the Clippers, his physicality — particularly in loose ball situations — was very difficult for the L.A. to handle. If Sochan doesn’t get hurt, it’s fair to say that the Spurs probably win this game.

Grade: B

Keldon Johnson

This performance didn’t move the needle much for Johnson. He had some hard-nosed finishes in the paint and played average individual defense. However, Johnson didn’t shoot a three, did very little playmaking and his team-defense was sometimes a step slow.

Grade: B-

Stephon Castle

Castle did okay. He was burly in the paint on offense. His ball-handling and driving look good. He hit a midrange jumper and authored a few smart passes. Defensively, he had some positive plays but he also had a couple rookie mistakes.

Grade: B-

Malaki Branham

Watching Branham was frustrating. His shot-selection was poor; he was forcing too many looks. His decision-making wasn’t good. He failed to take advantage of a few opportunities. Defensively, Branham was clearly the worst player on the team. All in all, it was simply a struggle for him.

Grade: D

Zach Collins

It was a strange outing for Collins. He missed all five of his shots from the field and only pulled down one defensive rebound. However, he did a bit better than the numbers suggest. He was physical in the paint, his hands were active, he set good screens and he moved well without the ball. Collins didn’t have a good game but it wasn’t especially bad, either.

Grade: C+

Sandro Mamukelashvili

Mamukelashvili entered the game to begin the fourth quarter and started things with a bang when he knocked down a three-pointer. While the effort level remained high, he couldn’t quite keep the momentum going in his favor. If Sochan misses time, expect Mamu to begin to see many more minutes. In Los Angeles, there were flashes of the goodness he could bring to the table.

Grade: B

Mitch Johnson

With Pop out for an indefinite period of time, Johnson is now in charge. Against the Clippers, I thought the interim coach struggled after the glorious first quarter. He put too much of the burden on the starters, which played a role in the listless fourth quarter. Barnes played too many minutes considering he wasn’t doing much on either end. Allowing Champagnie to act as the chief defensive stopper in the fourth quarter was a mistake. Paul, at 39, can’t be the every-down quarterback — there’s got to be more sharing of the playmaking duties. The first quarter was awesome but everything after that was a struggle for the coaching staff.
