Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers

NBA: Los Angeles Clippers at San Antonio Spurs

Spurs look to build a winning streak in Los Angeles.

The San Antonio Spurs will take a two-game winning streak into the Intuit Dome, where they’ll fave “The Wall” and a rambunctious California crowd. After taking down the Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves, they’ll take on the depleted Los Angeles Clippers. Without Kawhi Leonard (injury) and Paul George (free agency), it’s the James Harden show in LA.

Harden is averaging 21.8 points and 10.8 assists. Despite his success, the Clippers have failed to be a consistently effective offensive team. They average just 108.3 points per game and shoot just 33% from three. San Antonio’s defense has looked much improved this season, led by the efforts of Victor Wembanyama and Jeremy Sochan, the latter will likely have the Harden matchup.

San Antonio’s schedule eases up after a few tough matchups to start the season. There is an opportunity for the team to build a real winning streak over the next few games. It will have to start with a focused effort on the Spurs’ first west-coast road trip of the season.

What to watch for

The turnover battle

The Spurs and the Clippers are some of the most turnover-prone teams in the league. They’ve cleaned up the mistakes throughout San Antonio’s two-game winning streak, turning the ball over just 12 times per game in that stretch. The Clippers give the ball away 17.8 times per game. San Antonio’s swarming defense, led by Wembanyama and Sochan, could cause some issues for a Clippers team struggling on the offensive end.

Owning the glass

The Clippers may be battered and bruised, but they will still battle on the glass. They are led by the bruising big man, Ivica Zubac, who is averaging 17.5 points and 13 rebounds (3.8 of them offensive). San Antonio has been a good rebounding team, too. They’re active on the offensive glass and secure stops with gang rebounding on the defensive end. With two tough interior teams, a rebounding advantage could create an edge.

San Antonio’s aggressive offense

In the Spurs’ last two games, there has been a noticeable aggression on the offensive end. It’s started with Chris Paul looking for his shot in the pick-and-roll. That opened up more avenues for Wembanyama and helped shooters like Harrison Barnes find openings. Sochan has been constantly attacking the paint and finishing with both strength and finesse. The Clippers are a respectable defensive team, albeit not one that causes many turnovers. The Spurs should take advantage of that fact and go at the Los Angeles defense.
