Victor Wembanyama’s passing is key for the Spurs to reach the next level

San Antonio Spurs vs Utah Jazz

As Wemby showed in his 5x5 games, he has the tools to be a huge part of the Spurs’ passing game — if he can cut back the turnovers.

At this point in his very young career, the historical statistical feats for reigning Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama have ceased to surprise. It’s not that they are no longer astonishing but that they happen with such regularity that they are almost expected. However, the fact that he can rack up stats, and in the natural flow of the game, are indicative of even more potential bubbling beneath the surface.

In his most recent accomplishment, Wembanyama logged his second game with at least five points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks, known as a five-by-five game, in a decisive victory against the Utah Jazz. And for a player known for his defense, it’s worth honing in on an aspect of his game that could really open up the offensive side for the Spurs: his passing.

Against Utah, Wembanyama had seven assists. As the tallest player on the court and already a star, he will naturally have some defensive gravity with and without the ball. If he’s going to find a level of superstardom, he will need to learn to use that gravity, along with height, vision, and his advanced basketball IQ, to manipulate the defense. Which is exactly what we saw against the Jazz.

Some assists were pretty boilerplate, either in transition to the player up the floor or to someone with a mismatch, but a majority of the assists were Wembanayama taking what the defense gave him and manipulating it to his will.

The Passes

Here, in transition, Wembanyama runs the floor after a miss. As he passes halfcourt and gets the ball, he shows no hesitation. He knows every defender is looking for him as they completely miss Harrison Barnes on the wing, whom Wembanyama immediately feeds for an easy basket.

Getting Wembanyama the ball with good post position has been a focus, especially when he has mismatches. This forces defenses to either send help or let him go to work and score in isolation. When teams commit to sending help, it obviously frees up another offensive player. What makes this pass to Sandro Mamukelashvili remarkable is where Wembanyama places it. He sees the double coming with Mamukelashvili cutting and dimes it up right near the rim for the alley-oop. The dime couldn’t have been more efficient. It’s an easy read and finding cutters could be there for an easy assist or two a game for Wembanyama and the Spurs.

In his best pass of the night, he might as well have had the Jazz defense in the palm of his hand. Chris Paul’s quick drive and kick to the top of the arc demands every black jersey turn focus to Wembanyama. Wembanyama could should but as soon as he gets the defender in the air with a pump fake, he then gets in the paint, draws every defender within a six foot radius, and is able to hit Paul with a no-look pass in the corner.

Turnovers

Making the right reads and getting the ball to the open man isn’t entirely new for Wembanyama. There are more than a couple of good assists that can be found in his rookie assist film. What makes his passing more important going into year two is not only how it opens up the rest of the offense and helps his teammates, but also how he can shape up his horrific assist-to-turnover ratio, as it will be pivotal to his progression,

For his career, Wembanyama averages nearly exactly one assist for every turnover per game, For a player with a usage of 28.9 percent, 94th percentile among bigs per cleaningtheglass.com, he either needs to get more assists or turn the ball over less for the Spurs to be successful. Ideally, as he gets more assists, those turnovers will go down. If he can get his assists to up to five per game, it’s at least manageable. In his rookie season, he had only nine games with 7 or more assists; he already has one thus far. Drop it to five assists, and it was twenty-four games last season; he has two already this season.

Granted, a high usage can mean more turnovers. Especially considering he is only 20 years old, they are going to happen. But a game like that five-by-five showed his potential as a consistent and effective play-maker.

All this culminates to his potential as a play-maker might actually be underrated. If he can dish a few more dimes per game like he did in Salt Lake City, and hold on to the ball a little better like he did last night against the Timberwolves, his offensive efficiency is set to skyrocket. That poses well not only for him, but for the team’s offensive potential as well, the rest of which also has a turnover problem. With his height and vision paired with an ever-growing basketball IQ, Wembanyama will not only make himself better but also those around him. The mark of a true generational superstar.
