San Antonio vs. Minnesota, Final Score: Spurs handle Timberwolves 113-103

NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves at San Antonio Spurs

Spurs’ Fierce Four (Wembanyama, Sochan, Paul, and Johnson) erased Minnesota’s first half lead to bring the team to .500

Without Gregg Popovich (unspecified illness), patrolling the sidelines, San Antonio (3-3) played a highly competitive and competent first half, erased an early seven-point deficit to Minnesota (3-3), who was on a SEGABABA, and took a five-point lead into halftime. The Spurs played their most impressive second half, given the high-level quality of their opponent, to storm out to a 19-point lead and held on for the 113-103 victory, while shooting over 50% for the game.

Jeremy Sochan (19 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists) and Victor Wembanyama (17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks) were bolstered by Keldon Johnson’s finest game of the season (25 points and 8 rebounds), and asserted themselves in the paint and on the boards (44-32) against the bulkier Wolves’ frontline. They received ample assistance from Chris Paul (15 points and 13 assists), and Harrison Barnes’ timely production (14 points) proved pivotal in some tense fourth quarter moments.

Julius Randle (21 points and 5 rebounds) and Anthony Edwards (21 points and 5 rebounds) were not enough to counter the Spurs’ balance tonight in defeat. Donte DiVincenzo (14 points) and Sixth Man of the Year Naz Reid (11 points) chipped in off the bench.

Both teams stormed out of the gates and shot well from the field and at the line. Paul and Wembanyama staked San Antonio to a solid start, while Edwards, Gobert, and Randle feasted from distance and in the paint. On top of the great scoring pace, the teams combined for only two turnovers in the excellent stanza - one each. The teams left the quarter tied at 32.

Wembanyama made the first half of the second quarter his personal highlight reel (see sequences below), but Minnesota continued to put persistent pressure on the Spurs’ defense to keep a tenuous advantage. Nickeil Alexander-Walker’s three again put San Antonio’s deficit to seven. The “Paul to Sochan” battery combined for a dunk and an and-1. Sochan’s scurry from right-to-left netted him a reverse lay-up (a la Tony Parker) and tied the game. Paul’s three nudged his team into the lead, which the team was able to hold onto as San Antonio asssted on 15 of their 24 first-half field goals. The Wolves left the half down five.

In yet another encouraging third quarter effort, Johnson continued his furious drives to the rim with reckless abandon, while Sochan was, by far, the most impactful big through the first three quarters. Randle was able to bowl over and through defenders to get past the 20-point scoring mark. San Antonio continued its torrid shooting pace - taking advantage of a Wolves squad that played late into last night on national TV. Just as impressively, the Spurs had as many steals and blocks (9) as turnovers (9) in taking care of the ball. The resilient Spurs went into the fourth up 13.

Observations

  • Niece #1: “Paul is the cutest starter”. Niece #2: “The guy with the brown hair (Sochan) is the ugliest”. They are now hopefully lifelong Spurs fans.
  • Victor Ease: Early on in the opening stanza, Wembanyama put Julius Randle in a blender on the post and swished home a Duncanesque banker.
  • In the first half, Sochan, after getting called for a questionable offensive foul, forced Edwards into a travel on the next possession. His compete level is on another level.
  • Julian Champagnie did a wonderful job keeping Edwards in a confined space on his 3-point attempts - and without drawing fouls either.
  • Stephon Castle, at the end of the opening frame, with an eager Edwards defending him and took him deep into the paint before missing a tough floater in the lane. I think he’s got that dog in him. It does seem like the staff want him taking shots from the top of the key.
  • Sequence of the Game #1: Wembanyama managed to re-create Michael Jordan’s famous baseline move on the Knicks from 1992 with Naz Reid draped all over him and slam home a reverse baseline dunk WITHOUT. AN. ADDITIONAL. DRIBBLE.
  • Sequence of the Game #2: So much excitement took place throughout the second quarter. However, after Wembanyama turned away a Gobert dunk attempt at the rim, he was at the receiving end of a Paul pocket pass (say that a bunch of times fast) for a soaring one-handed slam.
  • Sequence of the Game #3: Late in the shotclock and trapped deep in the paint midway through the fourth, Champagnie found a cutting Barnes for a gliding dunk to preserve a 13-point advantage.
  • The teams combined excitedly for 30 in the first 4+ minutes of action. Paul’s midrange prowess kept the Spurs right at the Wolves’ heels, while Randle found success in the paint. An uber-confident Wembanyama had two highlight-worthy moves preceding smooth buckets prompting Jacob Tobey to utter “Wemby’s nasty isn’t he.” The offensive pace slowed considerably in the ensuing minutes. Zach Collins’ catch-and-shoot three gave San Antonio the lead momentarily, but a flurry of Wolves’ threes put the Spurs down seven. Keldon Johnson’s wing three tied things at 32 after one.
  • Gobert swished several free throws to start the second period, while Johnson converted a tough floater over him. Wembanyama then did one of his ‘never seen that’ moves on the baseline for a dunk. Johnson willed home his second and third paint buckets over Gobert to keep it a one-possession game. Wembanyama’s dunk and free throws put San Antonio back in the lead again for mere moments. Johnson’s next foray into the paint - accentuated his 6-for-7 start. Sochan and Wembanyama then teamed to force a shot clock violation and the forward lofted a sweet lob to the center at the other end. Wembanyama’s block on Gobert preserved a 62-57 result heading into the break.
  • Edwards sought out his offense at the start of the third quarter. Paul resumed his passing wizardry (and Sean Elliott likening him to a ‘surgeon out there’) and dropped a lovely dime to Sochan for a dunk. Sochan stripped Randle, and after the weirdest 3-on-1 fast break drill, found Julian Champagnie for a dunk in transition to put San Antonio up a dozen. Jaden McDaniels and Sochan got caught up in the lane on a loose ball, which resulted in double technicals. Sochan responded by swatted away Reid’s hook attempt. Wembanyama’s assisted Johnson on corner and straightaway threes to give the Spurs biggest lead at 19. Randle woke up from a slumber and scored several impressive buckets to pull the Wolves within ten. After Randle shoved Collins off the TV screen to get a basket, the referees finally whistled him for an offensive foul after he clocked Collins in the torso.
  • San Antonio had its sloppiest possessions over several minutes to start the fourth, but Minnesota was unable to capitalize. Champagnie answered Donte DiVincenzo’s three with one of his own to make it 102-85. Some selfish Spurs possessions allowed the Wolves to close to eleven again. The Black Falcon helped secure the home win against Minnesota - first, he got himself open for a dunk off of a Champagnie feed, and then Sochan rescued an errant Wembanyama airball, and found a cutting Barnes for a lay-up.
  • Wolves coach Chris Finch put in the reserves with 3:08 still left - despite it being ‘only’ a 14-point game, and fans were able to see rookie Rob Dillingham don the Minnesota jersey. I really liked that fill-in coach Mitch Johnson let his veterans stay in until 79 seconds remained.
