(Victor Wembanyama)
评分:A
(Chris Paul)
评分:A
(Jeremy Sochan)
(Julian Champagnie)
(Harrison Barnes)
(Keldon Johnson)
(Stephon Castle)
(Malaki Branham)
(Zach Collins)
(Sandro Mamukelashvili)
评分:A-
(Blake Wesley)
(Pop)

Grades: San Antonio Spurs at Utah Jazz – Game #5
The San Antonio Spurs snapped a two-game losing streak and improved their record to 2-3 with a 106-88 victory over the Utah Jazz (0-5) on Thursday night. Victor Wembanyama stole the show by posting a 5×5, the second time he’s done that in his career.
Early on, things weren’t going swimmingly for the Silver and Black. In fact, the winless Jazz led for a majority of the first half. In the third quarter, San Antonio’s 12-0 run allowed the Spurs to grab the momentum. The Jazz went scoreless in the final two minutes of the third quarter and trailed by ten points, 77-67, heading into the fourth.
In the final stanza, the Spurs had little trouble holding on for an 18-point victory.

Spurs at Jazz – Final Grades
Victor Wembanyama
After a feckless performance last night, Wembanyama bounced back in legendary fashion tonight against the Jazz. The sophomore notched a 5×5 with 25 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, five steals and five blocks in 34 minutes. Those numbers may actually undersell just how dominant Wembanyama was on this night, as the Spurs outscored the Jazz 87-44 when he was on the court. Defensively, he was insanely active and stayed busy breaking up plays. Offensively, I thought it was Wembanyama’s passing that was his best attribute. But, yeah, as the statistics suggest, he impacted the game in just about every conceivable area. This was exactly the type of outing Wembanyama needed after his relatively quiet start to the season.
Grade: A
Chris Paul
Paul was awesome. He was murder in the midrange, dropped three three-pointers and was orchestrating the show at a high level. His passing was spectacular and his pick-and-roll play was brilliant. Paul finished with only one turnover despite being in the middle of the action. Defensively, he more than held his ground, remained active in the passing lanes and pulled down seven boards. Paul is too well-aged to perform like this every night but he proved that he can still play at elite level from time to time.
Grade: A
Jeremy Sochan
The good: Sochan’s energy remains fantastic. He is playing physically and he finds a way to impact nearly every possession. I liked that he shot four three-pointers even though he only made one. Until this game, he was extra, extra hesitant to let shots go from deep. Defensively, his fundamentals were very sound. The bad: Sochan lacked efficiency on this night. The team would have also been better served if he slowed down a little bit and played with more strategy.
Grade: C+
Julian Champagnie
The Jazz took away Champagnie’s three-point looks yet he still found ways to contribute. He ran the court hard in transition, rebounded well in crowds and swiped three steals in 25 minutes. Overall, I thought Champagnie’s defense was above average and I appreciated him finding ways to contribute on offense. That said, he needs to get back to dropping threes if he’s truly going to be impactful on a night to night basis.
Grade: B-
Harrison Barnes
Barnes didn’t play well. He had a few awkward and slow closeouts defensively. Offensively, he missed all three of his long-range bombs. On both ends of the court, Barnes was basically just getting in the way.
Grade: C-
Keldon Johnson
Johnson is still waiting for a breakout performance this season. Against the Jazz, he did well by getting to the free throw line for seven attempts and his drives were about as burly as they come. I also thought his defense was a bit better than average. But he also hit only 1-of-6 three-pointers while finishing without an assist in 28 minutes. With Vassell out, one would have assumed that Johnson was going to pick up that slack. That hasn’t really happened.
Grade: C+
Stephon Castle
There were more flashes of talent for Castle. Defensively, he’s really good on the ball and very aware away from the ball. Offensively, he can handle the ball and make the right passes. Scoring-wise, the most notable moment of Castle’s night was when he hit his first three-pointer of his NBA career. Hopefully we see many more of those from the rookie.
Grade: B-
Malaki Branham
Branham entered this game red hot but he ended up cooling down on Halloween. He was only 1-for-5 from the floor and forced a couple of his shots. That said, his one made shot was a three-pointer, he passed the ball a little bit better than usual and he was much more energetic on the defensive end than usual.
Grade: B-
Zach Collins
That was a rough outing for Collins. He airballed a three-pointer by a mile, didn’t do much on defense and even his passing was missing in action on the offensive end. The drop off from Wembanyama to Collins was indescribably massive tonight.
Grade: D+
Sandro Mamukelashvili
In search of a spark, the coaches turned to Mamukelashvili and the move worked perfectly. He came off the bench and was ready to rock. He drained a three-pointer, moved very well without the ball and helped get the team hustling in transition. Performances like this could land Mamu a spot in the rotation — especially if Collins can’t contribute consistently.
Grade: A-
Blake Wesley
Wesley got off the bench in the first half but his play was very forgettable. The Jazz weren’t guarding him from deep but he missed a pair of threes. His decision-making was wonky, as evidenced by his two turnovers in six minutes. Defensively, I liked his vivacity but his actual impact wasn’t especially noticeable.
Grade: D
Pop
Pop did a much better job of getting Wembanyama involved. Specifically, I loved the wrinkle of the big Frenchman getting screens by smaller guards. With the Jazz unable to switch, that allowed Wembanyama to get space to operate. I also liked that Pop gave Castle a longer look in the second half. Going with Mamukelashvili also turned out really well for the good guys.
Grade: B+
