3 takeaways as Wembanyama bounces back in Spurs win

SALT LAKE CITY — After recording the lowest scoring game of his career, Victor Wembanyama came out firing.

In a strong bounce-back outing, Wembanyama notched his second career 5x5 game, recording 25 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, five blocks and five steals to lead the Spurs to a 106-88 win over the Utah Jazz on Thursday night.

Wembanyama’s first four shots were from 3-point range. He hit two on his way to finishing 4 for 13 from deep to set a personal high for attempts from beyond the arc.

“It’s less than an individual thing than wanting to get our offense to progress,” Wembanyama said. “Basketball is a game we have to play, to have fun, and that comes with being aggressive and having good spacing and not hesitating.”

Wembanyama scored just six points and took a career-low five shots in Wednesday’s loss at Oklahoma City. His response to that rare stinker was a stellar all-around outing that put him in some rare company.

Only two other players in NBA history have multiple 5x5 games: Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon (six in 1,238 games) and Andrei Kirilenko (three in 797 games).

Wembanyama has a pair in just 76 outings. And he’s eager for more.

“It tells me I need to get my standards up when I don’t get five by fives because I am able to help my team in all those areas,” he said. “It should be a consistent thing. As I have said before, it is something we must have, something I must have more often to be able to help my team in all those areas.”

The Spurs (2-3) trailed 30-19 after the first quarter and were down 53-47 at the half before dominating the third quarter 30-14 and winning the final frame 29-21.

Collin Sexton’s 16 points paced the Jazz, who fell to 0-5. Utah was without All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen (back spasms).

Here are three takeaways from the first of four meetings between the Spurs and the Jazz this season:

1. Wembanyama is going to do Wembanyama

The 7-foot-3 center celebrated Halloween by arriving at the Delta Center disguised as No-Face from “Spirited Away”, a 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film.

In the movie, No-Face represents the struggle to embrace one’s true nature.

It’s a message Wemby seems to have embraced with his 3-point shooting. Even though he entered the game shooting just 4 for 21 (19%) from distance, he didn’t hesitate to let them fly against the Jazz.

“To be able to make those shots, you have to take them first,” Wembanyama said. “How open I was today, I wouldn’t be surprised if I make way more than I did.”

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he “absolutely” wants Wembanyama to fire away from deep.

“He is more of a perimeter player than he is a post player,” Popovich said. “We want him to be able to do everything, isolate, shoot, do the whole deal. We just can’t do it all at once. It depends on the situation and what is going on.”

2. Spurs forging a defensive identity

After emphasizing the need for defensive improvement throughout the offseason and training camp, the Spurs are well on their way to establishing themselves as tough team on that end of the court.

On Thursday, they forced 25 turnovers, the most by a Spurs team since forcing 28 against Phoenix on Nov. 23, 2015.

“We’re not ready to be a top five defensive team by any stretch of the imagination, but we know that is the focus and we have played good defense throughout the season,” Popovich said. “We picked up where we left off from last year. I am really impressed with their understanding and enjoying what the defense can do for them.”

In holding the Jazz to just 14 points in the third quarter, the Spurs recorded nine steals. They finished with 17, further proof that they are committed to employing a smothering defense this season.

“It’s a must have for us, for our profile, and we have the opportunity to do it, with guys like Jeremy (Sochan) and Keldon (Johnson), who can put pressure on the ball with a very high motor,” Wembanyama said. “And, of course, I am trying top do my role, too. It should be our first focus coming into a game.”

3. Paul excelled as the closer

Wembanyama garnered the headlines with his 5x5 game, but it was Chris Paul who pushed the Spurs over the top for the win.

The 39-year-old point guard scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half on 6-for-9 shooting, including 2 for 4 from distance. He also finished with 10 assists for his first double-double as a Spur.

“He really took the game into his hands, and it paid off,” Wembanyama said. “And he didn’t do that randomly. He saw what they were trying to do in the first half, and he actually anticipated their adjustments so we could finish them from the jump. I think he understood that in this moment we needed him to score points, and he did.”

Said Paul, “I done played a few games. I just told (Wembanyama), 'Let me help you, too. There is a lot asked of him.”
