Thunder coach can attest to Chris Paul’s impact on young team

San Antonio Spurs guard Chris Paul (3) talks with San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan (10) during the second half against the Houston Rockets at Frost Bank Center on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs defeated the Rockets, 109-106, in their first home game of the season.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Mark Daigneault knows first hand how beneficial Chris Paul’s presence can be to a young team.

“He’s incredible,” the Oklahoma City Thunder coach said.

Daigneault was an assistant on Billy Donovan’s staff in 2019-20, the one season Paul spent with the Thunder. He recalled how the future Hall of Fame point guard led the team with both his words and actions.

“What gets a lot of attention, because he’s so verbal, is what he says,” Daigneault said before a preseason game in San Antonio three weeks ago. “There’s a lot of wisdom to that. What is more subtle but is more impactful is what he does. He has an unbelievable process of preparation for every day of his life that revolves around being ready to play basketball at a high level. He walks that every single day.”

The Spurs signed Paul to a one-year deal in July. Daigneault is confident they will benefit from Paul’s “competitive spirit” just like the Thunder did five years ago.

“He expects to win every game," said Daigneault, who won the Red Auerbach Trophy last season as the NBA’s coach of the year after leading the Thunder to a 57-25 record that made them the youngest team in NBA history to claim a No. 1 seed.

“He’s a serious competitor, in the locker room before the game, in every huddle during the game. His world revolves around those two hours and five minutes that the ball is live and the game is up in the air. The way he walks the walk on those things is just potent. That, to me, is what his legacy was with us.”

Oklahoma City star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was in his second season when Paul was his teammate. After being named an All-Star last season for the second straight season, the Canadian guard is averaging 28.7 points per game for the Thunder, who were 3-0 entering Wednesday night’s game against the Spurs (1-2).

“They’ve got a relationship," Daigneault said. "Shai would be able to describe that. I wouldn’t want to put words in his mouth. All I can speak to is what I saw of Chris. He’s a serious pro, when it comes to prep and when it comes to the team.”

Speaking to reporters after shootaround Wednesday morning, Paul said he forged “lifelong friendships and relationships” with several members of the Thunder family.

“I got a chance to get out with Shai yesterday – him being a dad now is the craziest thing ever,” he said. “Lu (Dort) was a rookie at the time…Mark was an assistant coach, all the assistant coaches, (general manager) Sam Presti, a lot of ties here.”

Paul remembered watching a lot of film with Gilgeous-Alexander.

“We understood the purposefulness of the game,” he said. “We literally talked basketball all the time, tried to see guys’ tendencies, the competitiveness and just the work that goes into being great.”

Paul has already rubbed off on the Spurs in sense that they are studying how he prepares for games and the things does training-wise to extend his career. Jeremy Sochan, who was just 2 years old when Paul entered the NBA in 2005, marvels at the North Carolina native’s staying power.

“I feel like that is the end goal,” Sochan said when asked if could imagine playing as long as Paul has. “Got to follow his footsteps in eating healthy, working on your body, keeping your mind right, and try to get as many seasons as I can.”

Paul is just the 11th player in NBA history to play at least 20 seasons in the league. The others are LeBron James (22), Vince Carter (22), Robert Parish (22), Kevin Willis (22), Kevin Garnett (21), Dirk Nowitzki (21), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (20), Kobe Bryant (20), Jamal Crawford (20) and Udonis Haslem (20).

Like Sochan, Zach Collins is soaking in all he can in regard to Paul’s training methods.

“Guys who play that long, there is a reason they are playing that long,” Collins said. “They are doing something right. It’s not all just genetics or them being lucky. You put in the work, you put in the time, you put the right things into your body, you sleep enough.”

Collins said he’s already learned from Paul the importance of time management.

“Off the court, he is a great example of how to carry yourself, how to prioritize yourself with your schedule,” the backup center said. “He is always on top of his routine.”
