Victor Wembanyama’s love for all things “Star Wars” was on display when the Spurs’ star center brought a player edition of the Chewbacca-inspired Nike GT Hustles nicknamed “Wookiee of the Year” to Saturday’s game.
The shoes are a tribute to “Wookiees,” the alien species of tall, furry animals in the “Star Wars” series of which Chewbacca is the most famous.

Nick DePaula, who reports on the footwear industry for ESPN and Boardroom, posted a photo of Wembanyama with a pair of the furry shoes in his lap before Saturday’s game with the post: “EXCLUSIVE: Victor Wembanyama has ‘Wookiee of the Year’ Nike GT Hustles tonight for San Antonio’s home opener—celebrating his Rookie of the Year season and his love for Star Wars.”
“It was a surprise for me,” Wembanyama said after Monday’s game. “It was gifted to me. I don’t know where the idea comes from, but I love the name, ‘Wookiee of the Year.’ It’s very nice.”
