3 Takeaways as Spurs win home opener behind Wembanyama
San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) flexes his arm after making a shot against the Houston Rockets during the second half at Frost Bank Center on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs defeated the Rockets, 109-106, in their first home game of the season.
Houston’s Jalen Green slithered for yet another layup in the fourth quarter Saturday, the Spurs’ once healthy lead down to a single basket, and Chris Paul had seen enough.
He was up off the Spurs’ bench and halfway to the scorer’s table before Green’s shot had even passed completely through the net.
This is why Paul was here, to help the young Spurs find a way to win these white-knuckle games they could not before. The 39-year-old point guard maestro wouldn’t give himself a perfect grade on that count, even after the Spurs held on to win their home opener 109-106.
“I could have been a lot better,” Paul said.
Still, for those scoring on a pass-fail basis the Spurs passed their first fourth-quarter test with Paul at the helm.
Victor Wembanyma scored 29 points, Jeremy Sochan added a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double and Keldon Johnson chipped in 16 points off the bench as the Spurs survived for their first victory of the season before a sold-out Frost Bank Center.
“We are all still learning each other, figuring it out,” Paul said. “We just talked about it here in the locker room: We want to learn and win at the same time.”
In that, Saturday was the best of both worlds for the Spurs, who were coming off a season-opener at Dallas in which the hard lessons came in a 17-point defeat.
“To win an NBA game is and always has been difficult,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “They are wars out there, so any win is a great win.”
For a while, the game did not seem like it would require much crunch-time work for the Spurs.
Fueled by a stellar early defensive effort that held the Rockets to 10 points in the second quarter, the Spurs took an 18-point lead into halftime.
Little by little, Houston clawed back.
Green powered the Rockets’ comeback with 29 points, while Fred VanVleet contributed 18 points and Dillon Brooks 16.
When Green scooted for a basket with 4:08 to go, drawing Houston within 98-96, the entire arena seemed to hold its breath at once.
Paul entered moments later. He would like to say everything was textbook flawless from there, but won’t.
The Spurs had some dry possessions. They let the Rockets get loose for layups down the stretch. Paul missed a short jumper. Wembanyama coughed up the ball when double-teamed.
But the Spurs did enough to win a game they might not have a year ago. And when Green’s game-tying 3-pointer at the horn clanged off the iron, they had reason to celebrate.
Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s confidence-boosting win, which improved the Spurs to 1-1:

1. Wemby’s confidence remains unshakeable
Not long ago, Wembanyama completed a preseason in which he went 1 of 9 from 3-point range. He made 1 of 8 in the season-opening loss to Dallas.
A different breed of 7-foot-3 man might to choose to ease his way into Game No. 2 a little closer to the basket.
Not Wembanyama. Perhaps to prove a point, Wembanyama’s first field-goal attempt Saturday came from darn near 30 feet.
I think Victor Wembanyama is happy tonight, but not sure…
pic.twitter.com/8fkYUOmtzl— Théo Quintard (@ TheoQuintard) October 27, 2024
With one foot still on the border of the Spurs’ midcourt logo, he swished it. Point made, Wembanyama went about putting together the kind of game the Spurs will take from him any night.
He missed only seven shots, going 10 of 17, and was 2-of-5 from the 3-point line. Throw in the three blocks, and this was the version of Wembanyama who dominated during his Rookie of the Year season.
2. Rebounding is not sexy, but it wins games
After getting pummeled on the boards in Dallas, the Spurs spent much of their morning walkthrough talking about rebounding.
“I think rebounding is what is going to make or break us,” center Zach Collins said.
That point of emphasis paid off for the Spurs on Saturday, especially in the first half. The Spurs out-rebounded the Rockets 49-34 in total, and limited them to 15 second chance points. Houston managed only one offensive rebound in the first half, a game after giving up 17 offensive boards to the Mavericks.
In addition to Sochan’s double-digit effort on the glass, the Spurs got eight boards apiece from Collins and Keldon Johnson off the bench. Wembanyama added seven.
Sitting at the postgame interview podium, Julian Champagnie grabbed a nearby box score and checked the rebounding column first.
“Like Coach says, it’s hard to win a game in this league,” he said. “We have to come out every day and do the little things, and that’s one of them.”
Rebounding and defense allowed the Spurs to grab control of the game in the second quarter, when they held the Rockets scoreless for a span of 9:07.
The 18-0 run the Spurs dropped during that stretch gave them the breathing room to win the game.
3. Spurs already have crunch-time faith in Castle
The Spurs’ closing lineup down the stretch contained four familiar faces and one new one.
Rookie Stephon Castle was entrusted to help bring the game home alongside Paul, Wembanyama, Sochan and Johnson.
The 19-year-old was out there mostly for defensive purposes, trying to cool off a rapidly catching-fire Green. Castle also handled the ball a bit – even with Paul on the floor – and made three of four free throws in the final 17.5 seconds to ice the victory.

Asked if this was a sign of his early confidence in the No. 4 overall pick, Popovich answered a question with a question.
“Well he was out there, right?” Popovich said. “I didn’t do that because I’m not confident in him.”
Castle was neither fazed nor surprised by being asked to help close out the first win of his NBA career.
“I feel like just being out there late game is credit to my defense. I feel like that’s when it’s needed most. So I was really just trying to lock in on that and then on the other end, just execute whatever Pop calls.”
