Twenty five seconds into the fourth quarter of the Thursday’s season opener in Dallas, Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan had his first predictable moment of the 2024-25 campaign.
Driving and flailing toward a layup, Sochan’s off arm caught Dallas center Daniel Gafford square in the head.
After video review, officials slapped Sochan with a flagrant foul.
Did he clock Gafford on purpose?
“(Bleep) no,” the pesky 21-year-old said after the Spurs’ 121-109 defeat at American Airlines Center. “I don’t think that’s a flagrant.”
With a gap-toothed grin, the oft-cheeky Sochan acknowledged something else that is inevitable.
“But that’s probably not going to be my only one this season,” Sochan said. “So let’s just get it over with.”
The foul resulted in a four-point possession for Dallas, as Gafford made two free throws then found a cutting Quentin Grimes for a dunk. Moments later, the Mavericks commenced a 15-2 run that blew the game open.
Other than his flagrant foul, the opening night reviews were good for Sochan, who equaled Julian Champagnie with a team-high 18 points.
He also played well defensively, with Dallas star Luka Doncic missing 10 of 15 attempts with Sochan as his primary defender.
Unlike last season, when Sochan opened as an ill-suited point guard, the former Baylor standout was more comfortable at his usual forward position.
“You grow up every year, you learn some things,” Sochan said. “My situations a little different than last year. It’s just me playing with energy, playing hard, trying to be everywhere.”
Sochan will hope to continue his solid start to his third NBA season when the Spurs open their home schedule Saturday against Houston at the Frost Bank Center.

Kidd rooting for Paul to eclipse him
New Spurs point guard Chris Paul began the season 197 assists shy of second place on the NBA’s career assist charts. The current second placeholder – Dallas coach Jason Kidd – was in the building Thursday night.
Kidd, who had 12,091 assists in his career, said he is rooting for Paul to overtake him, a circumstance that appears a mere formality this season so long as the 39-year-old stays healthy.
“He can have it,” Kidd said. “It’s well deserved.”
Paul crawled eight assists closer in his Spurs debut, a number that tied him with LeBron James for most on opening night for a player starting his 20th season.
Kidd believes a budding partnership with Victor Wembanyama should make the Paul’s assist-gathering even easier. With that in mind, Kidd said Paul should aim higher than finishing only second on the all-time list.
“When you have a target like Victor, he shouldn’t be thinking about my spot,” Kidd said, “but maybe John’s.”
That would be John Stockton, who might have already put the NBA’s all-time career assist record out of reach with 15,806.
Fire alarm follies
The night before Thursday’s opener, the Spurs got an unwanted wake-up call when the fire alarm at the team hotel began blaring around midnight.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he was told the alarm was accidentally pulled by a painting crew doing work around the hotel.
He remains skeptical of that explanation.
“They had painters in at midnight?” Popovich said. “That’s kind of strange.”
Sochan captured the moment on video in a social media post, jokingly blaming rogue Mavericks fans. The entire interruption lasted about 20 minutes.
Forward Sandro Mamukelashivili said he was unfazed by the screeching bells and whistles.
“I knew it was nothing,” Mamukelashvili said. “I went out into the hall and saw Jeremy screaming, then I went back to bed.”
Jones hobbled in collision
Backup point guard Tre Jones came up limping after a play late in the fourth quarter in which Dallas center Dereck Lively went diving at his legs after a loose ball.
After the game, a visibly hobbled Jones had a wrap on around his lower right shin to try and reduce swelling in what he said was a simple contusion. He considers himself day-to-day.
“I’ll be OK,” Jones said. “Hopefully the ice will help.”
