Spurs expect offseason work to result in 3-point improvement
MIAMI, FLORIDA - OCTOBER 15: Julian Champagnie #30 of the San Antonio Spurs shoots the ball against Tyler Herro #14 of the Miami Heat during the third quarter of a preseason game at Kaseya Center on October 15, 2024 in Miami, Florida.
Victor Wembanyama points to Julian Champagnie’s torrid 3-point shooting in the preseason as proof that a summer of hard work should help the Spurs show improvement from the perimeter this season.
“Julian’s numbers were just incredible during the summer, and I think he is going to prove he can be one of the great shooters of this league,” Wembanyama said. “I think (the team’s perimeter shooting) is going to be better, for sure.”
The Spurs want to become more efficient from distance after ranking 28th in the NBA last season at 34.7%. They set a franchise record in 2023-24 for 3-pointers made (1,036), but that total ranked just 16th in the league.
The offseason additions of Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes should help.
Paul, 39, shot 37.1% on 3.6 attempts last season for Golden State and owns a career percentage of 36.9% on 3.7 tries.
Barnes, 32, sank 38.7% last season on 4.7 attempts for Sacramento and is a career 37.9% shooter on 3.7 shots.
In the preseason, Paul shot 50.0% from distance on 3.3 attempts over three games, but Barnes struggled, hitting 33.3% on 3.6 attempts across five outings.
“I don’t really stress too much about preseason stats as a group, collectively or individually, just because it doesn’t mean anything,” Barnes said. “We step out there for the regular season and we want guys to step up and shoot with confidence regardless if they have been shooting 50 percent from three (in the preseason) or 10 percent from three. We want them to step in and shoot the shots that are open.”
Several players spent time working on their shots in the offseason with shooting coach Jimmy Baron, including Keldon Johnson, who shot 34.6% last season on 5.3 attempts.
“We prepared this summer to go out there and perform, and I feel like what we practiced and what we worked on with Jimmy will carry over to the season,” Johnson said. “He has put in a lot of time with all of us.”
After shooting 32.5% from long range last season on 5.5 attempts, Wembanyama shot just 11.1% on 4.5 attempts over his two preseason games.
Asked if he thinks he will take more or less 3-point shots this season, Wembanyama said, “I think it will be about the same number, but a better percentage.”
Long practice follows time off
Practice on Monday topped two-plus hours after the team had Sunday off following Saturday night’s Silver & Black Open Scrimmage.
“We had a great practice today,” Johnson said. “We got after it.”
Long, intense practices have been the norm for the Spurs since training camp started Oct. 1.
“We have been locked in and we are all on the same page,” Johnson said. "We’ve been practicing a lot, repping on a lot of things, so when it comes Thursday, we hit the ground running. "
The Spurs open the regular season at Dallas on Thursday night.
HOUSTON, TEXAS - OCTOBER 17: Sandro Mamukelashvili #54 of the San Antonio Spurs shoots against Alperen Sengun #28 of the Houston Rockets during the second half of a preseason game at Toyota Center on October 17, 2024 in Houston, Texas.
San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) shoots over Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero (5) during the first half of their NBA preseason game at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday, Oct 9, 2024. San Antonio beat Orlando 107-97.
