Spurs rookie Stephon Castle eager to continue to showcase versatility

Like so many others before him, Stephon Castle never saw it coming.

The Spurs’ prize rookie thought he had an easy bucket in the first half of the annual Silver & Black Open Scrimmage on Saturday night only to see the ball pinned against the backboard after Victor Wembanyama swooped in to smother the shot.

“I didn’t even see him,” Castle said. “I thought I had a wide-open layup. But it happens. That kind of size, that kind of versatility, you get used to it.”

Wembanyama’s out-of-nowhere rejection thrilled the thousands of fans in attendance at the free event at Frost Bank Center, but they were also happy to see Castle rebound from it to provide a few highlights of his own.

Wembanyama’s Black team pulled away late for a 74-64 win, but it was Castle who emerged as the affair’s star after the 2023-24 Rookie of the Year exited for good in the third quarter after logging about 14 minutes.

Castle’s biggest moments came when he swished a shot from the top of the arc before swishing a buzzer-beating mid-range jumper over David Duke Jr. at the end of the third on a designed pick-and-roll play to get the rookie the ball.

“It was good defense, but I just happened to make it,” Castle said.

Castle’s play on both ends of the court has been one of the biggest stories of the preseason, but it ended without a clear picture of what his role will be when the season kicks off in Dallas on Oct. 24.

“I don’t really know, but it doesn’t really matter to me,” he said of how Gregg Popovich plans to use him.

Labeled as the team’s point guard of the future, he saw time at both guard spots and at small forward after the Spurs picked him fourth overall in the June draft.

“I feel like just using my versatility to be on the court is the main thing,” said Castle, who helped Connecticut win the national title as a freshman last season. “Just going out there and not really giving myself any kind of expectations. Just kind of trying to play free. So, I feel like the biggest thing is being on the court so I can find a way to help us win. That’s a good enough role for me.”

As for Wembanyama, the 19-year-old Castle believes his 20-year-old teammate is ready for another outstanding season after playing in just two of the five preseason games and having limited minutes in his pair of outings.

“I feel like Vic’s ceiling is limitless,” Castle said. “I feel like he can do everything on the court, whether it’s defend or bring the ball up, pick or pop, shoot off ball screens. It really doesn’t matter. I am excited for the year he is going to have.”

Minix earns final two-way spot

Undrafted rookie Riley Minix phoned his mother immediately after his agent told him the Spurs had agreed to sign the Florida native to a two-way contract.

“She’s been great,” Minix said of Kathy Minix. “A lot of sacrifice. She’s a big part of how I got here and the man I am today, along with the rest of my family, my father and my three brothers. They have helped me a lot throughout this whole process. Just continuing to stay confident with who I am and who they raised me to be.”

The Spurs announced Saturday morning they had signed the 24-year-old forward to their final two-way contract. Second-round rookie guard/forward Harrison Ingram and fourth-year guard Duke have the other two-way deals.

The signing of Minix was expected after the Morehead State product averaged 7.7 points and made 70% of his field goals (8 of 12) in an average of 7.8 minutes over three exhibition contests.

The move, coupled with the waiving of veteran guards Brandon Boston Jr. and Malachi Flynn, gave the Spurs a full roster, with 15 guaranteed NBA contracts and the three players on two-way deals.

The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Minix played four seasons at NAIA Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla., before using the extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic to transfer to Division I Morehead State, where he earned Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year after averaging 22.4 points and 10.1 rebounds in his one season at the Kentucky school.

Popovich said last week he didn’t know who Minix was at the start of the camp. Asked how he got on the coach’s radar, Minix said, “Just staying confident, playing my game, doing whatever the team needed, being able to shoot the ball, make shots when I was open, just all the little things I have been doing all my life.”

Minix’s contract calls for him to spend the bulk of his rookie season with Austin in the G League.

“I get to see the city and see what it has to offer and then play with another group of guys,” he said.

Team takes care of housekeeping moves

The Spurs announced Friday they had exercised their fourth-year team option on Jeremy Sochan, Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley and their third-year option on Wembanyama for the 2025-26 season.
