San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama aims to be improved playmaker

HOUSTON – Time after time during his rookie season, Victor Wembanyama’s teammates – heaven help them – tended to somehow miss the 7-foot-3 Frenchman with lob passes.

Having barely crossed halfcourt on a possession in the first half of the Spurs’ 120-117 preseason loss to the Heat, Wembanyama spied Jeremy Sochan streaking toward the rim and lofted a perfect rainbow for an alley-oop dunk.

“He’s a natural to it,” Sochan said.

This fits with one of Wembanyama’s goals heading into his sophomore NBA season. He wants to be an even better playmaker than he was as a rookie.

“I think it would be a good mark of improvement,” Wembanyama said. “I have to facilitate for my teammates.”

Wembanyama has a long way to go to catch that lofty mark.

His goals for the upcoming season are a bit more modest. After averaging 3.9 assists last season, Wembanyama aims to top four per game in 2024-25.

With the ball in his hands on almost every Spurs possession, and with the potential to become one of the league’s best passing big men if he isn’t already, it is a goal Wembanyama stands a good chance of reaching.

A blossoming two-man game with Sochan can only help in that endeavor.

“We are building that connection and Jeremy is making the right plays right now,” Wembanyama said. “He is making himself available.”

Perhaps most impressive of all, Wembanyama’s lob pass to Sochan drew rave reviews from Paul, the NBA’s resident king of lob passes.

“Getting a chance to play with him every night and seeing something new, something different, is fun,” Paul said.
