MIAMI — Another game, another light load for Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs fell 120-117 to the Miami Heat on Tuesday night with the 2023-24 NBA rookie of the year logging just 17 minutes — all in the first half — after sitting out Saturday’s loss to the Utah Jazz.
Wembanyama has played in only two of the team’s four preseason games. He had 23 minutes in a win over the Orlando Magic last week after sitting out a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the exhibition opener.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said the star center will likely get another light load against the Rockets on Thursday night in the preseason finale at Houston.
The Spurs have eased Wembanyama back into action after a long summer that included playing for France in the Olympics. Popovich also indicated he got banged up a bit during what has been an intense training camp.
“It’s a couple of bumps and bruises and a little bit of precaution,” Popovich said. “It’s a long season.”
After amassing eight points, seven rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block against the Heat, Wembanyama said he was on board with the preseason plan mapped out for him by the team’s medical staff.
“I trust them,” he said. “I think it’s important to get some intense minutes but also to be prepared for the first game. We want quality minutes in the preseason, and I am ready to apply that.”
Miami (2-1) broke open what had been a close game with a 13-2 run that left them with a 113-105 lead with 2:50 left.
A pull-up 3-pointer by Malaki Branham pulled the Spurs (2-2) within 118-117 with 7 seconds left, but rookie Pelle Larrson sank a pair of free throws to give the Heat the lead by the final score with 3.5 seconds remaining.

The freakishly gifted 7-foot-3 Frenchman showed off his point guard skills with a long lob feed to Sochan for a one-handed dunk early in the first quarter. The play started with Wembanyama dribbling the ball up the court after recording a steal on the other end. When he came within a few feet of top of the key, he let it fly as Sochan broke in from the wing.

“Man, getting a chance to play with him every night and see something different is fun,” Paul said. “He got the ball and he pushed it.”
Said Sochan, “He knows the game. He’s natural to it. It was a good pass.”
Wembanyama said it would be a “good mark of improvement” to average better than 4.0 assists this season.
“I have to be a playmaker,” he said. “I have to facilitate for my teammates.”
Sochan could become one of his favorite targets. After the lob dunk, Wembanyama got the ball to him several more times, a few of which the forward converted into buckets.
“I think it’s just natural,” Sochan said of the growing two-man chemistry between him and Wembanyama. “Of course, we talk about it here and there. But it’s natural, we know where each other are and we play off each other.”
Rotation seems set
In each of Wembanyama’s outings, Popovich has gone with a starting five that includes Paul and Julian Champagnie in the backcourt and Sochan and Harrison Barnes on the wings.
On Tuesday, he tightened the bench up, giving the bulk of the backup minutes to Johnson; Zach Collins, who started the second half in place of Wembanyama, rookie Stephen Castle, and Blake Wesley before giving fourth quarter minutes to Malaki Branham, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Charles Bassey, who played in his first game since suffering a torn ACL on Dec. 10 while with the Austin Spurs.

But afterward Popovich wouldn’t commit to a starting five for opening night at Dallas on Oct. 24.
“It’s so early,” he said. “We have all kind of things to work on. I don’t necessarily have a starting lineup that is in stone yet.”
One thing is certain Devin Vassell will return to the first unit after he recovers from the foot surgery he underwent in June.
“I don’t think it’s going to be a Lou Gehrig situation,” Popovich joked.
Vassell is set to be re-evaluated on Nov. 1. After working out on the court before the game, he tweeted, “This is the best I felt in a long timeeeee!!”
Bassey shows no fear in return
The 6-foot-10, 240-pound fourth-year center logged 10 minutes in his return, all in the second half. He finished with four points and four rebounds.

Bassey said he had to battle a case of the nerves when he entered the game.
“I didn’t know how I would feel and I didn’t know if I was going to play,” he said. “Overall, I felt good. I was moving well. It was great.”
