According to league sources, the Spurs plan to immediately waive McDaniels after the deal is consummated.
Seeking the roster flexibility that comes with jettisoning McDaniels, the Kings are sending an unprotected 2031 second-round pick to the Spurs in exchange for absorbing his $4.7-million contract.
Since NBA rules dictate each side of a deal must give up an asset to made a deal legal, the Spurs are sending Sacramento a 2025 second-round pick originally acquired from Chicago that is top-55 protected. As such, the pick will return to the Spurs unless they finish with one of the league’s five best records in the upcoming season.
It the third time in the past four months the Spurs made a trade involving pick slots in the 2031 draft.
The Spurs own Minnesota’s first-round pick that year, thanks to the draft-night deal that sent Rob Dillingham to the Timberwolves. The Spurs also have the right to swap first-round picks with Sacramento in 2031 for their help facilitating the July trade that delivered DeMar DeRozan to the Kings from Chicago.
