MIAMI – As the start of the regular season nears, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich yearns for the days of longer training camps and preseason schedules.
“Personally, I would rather have the practice because you really have to concentrate to not skip steps,” Popovich said. "There is so much stuff you want to get in by the first game – you are not ready for a full-court press, or you need this out-of-bounds play with three seconds on the clock and you haven’t really gone over it as you would if you had more time.
“So, in that sense, I would rather have the practice time.”
Conventional wisdom calls for the Spurs to use one of their final preseason games as a dress rehearsal of sorts for opening night.
Sochan shooting change a team effort
Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan’s decision to return to shooting free throws with two hands rather than the unorthodox one-handed style he used last season was made after he received plenty of input from his coaches, including shooting guru Jimmy Baron.
“It was a whole team idea,” Sochan said.
The move to a more orthodox shot at the foul line came after Baron helped him tweak his jumper in the summer. The thinking was he should have the same form when shooting either at the free throw line or out on the perimeter.
“I think it makes sense with my shot in general to have it translate,” he said.
Sochan said the changes he made in his perimeter shot centered on “having my elbow higher and out a little bit and having my wrist activated on the catch.”

Rookie expects support in return to Florida
Spurs undrafted rookie forward and Florida native Riley Minix is expecting a healthy turnout of family and friends at Tuesday night’s game.
“I should have quite a bit,” the native of Vero Beach said. “I am getting some tickets for my family and then a bunch of other friends, old coaches and then some other people from my hometown are coming. It should be fun.”
Vero Beach is recovering after several tornadoes spawned from Hurricane Milton damaged the area last week.
“We didn’t actually think the east coast was going to get hit that bad, but in the outer bands there were a bunch of tornadoes, at least four or five that ripped through my hometown,” Minix said. “But my family is all safe. There were a couple of casualties, but overall most people made it out and are getting back on their feet.”
Roster trimmed
The Spurs training camp roster stands at 20 after they waived forward Nathan Mensah on Sunday. An injury limited Mensah to appearing in one preseason game.
The roster must be finalized for the regular season by 4 p.m. on Oct. 21.
The regular season roster limit is 15 players, but teams can add three two-way contract players to bring the total to 18. Two-way players don’t count toward the 15-man limit. The Spurs have one open two-way slot.
