Stephon Castle’s ability to draw fouls highlighted in Spurs win
San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) drives past Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner (22) during the first half of their NBA preseason game with Orlando at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday, Oct 9, 2024. San Antonio beat Orlando 107-97.
Chris Paul pulled Stephon Castle aside for a chat after passing the ball ahead to the rookie and then failing to see him drive to the basket.
"I said, ‘What are you doing, man? Every time you go in there, something good happens,’ " Paul said.
Fortunately for the Spurs, it was one of the rare passive moments for the lottery-pick rookie in their 107-97 preseason win over Orlando on Wednesday night.
Castle finished with a team-high 17 points, four assists and two steals in 22 minutes off the bench. He sank seven of his game-high 10 free throws to go along with 4-for-9 shooting from the field, including 2 for 5 from 3-point range.
And after he watched film of his six-turnover performance in Monday’s loss to Oklahoma City, he reduced that number to just one.
But it was the way he attacked the basket that stood out most.
“Just trying to use my speed to try to beat somebody to the rim, and they are trying to recover, so it puts them in bad spots,” he said of his ability to get to the foul line.
Castle’s two 3s also stood out, mainly because perimeter shooting wasn’t his thing as a freshman last season at Connecticut, where he shot 26.7% from deep on just 2.2 attempts per game in a mainly defensive-minded role.
Although the sample size is small, his long-range shooting against the Magic signals he could be better than advertised from downtown.
“I would say so,” he said. “It’s just the work I have been putting in, just staying in the gym constantly, being confident in it. My teammates are super confident in me, and they want me to take those shots.”
And to stay on the attack.
“He is a tough nut,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.
As for the 39-year-old Paul, he’s ready to continue sharing his wisdom with the 19-year-old Georgia native.
“I am a basketball fan, so I watched him play in college,” Paul said. “To get a chance to be his teammate and to see him develop day in and day out, has been fun too.”
Mamukelashvili, Wesley make bid for bigger roles
Two young players vying for bigger roles turned in impressive performances off the bench.
In 17 minutes, forward Sandro Mamukelashvili had nine points on the strength of a 3-for-6 effort from the 3-point stripe to go along with four assists. In 23 minutes, guard Blake Wesley contributed five points and five assists against only one turnover.
Asked what Mamukelashvili needs to do to crack his rotation, Popovich said, “I would say just to be solid. His confidence is building. He has always been at the end of the bench and him feeling good about himself is really important. It helps every facet of his game.”
Through two games, Mamukelashvili has connected on 6 of 10 from 3-point territory.
“He definitely has more confidence in his three-point shot,” Popovich said. “He did that on both nights, so that makes him somebody we have to look at very seriously if he is going to continue to make shots like that.”
Wesley, who has produced a team-high 12 assists against just one turnover, has also stood out in his bid for more playing time after averaging 15.8 minutes through his first two seasons.
“He is just more committed,” Popovich said. “He has totally bought in defensively, making better decisions offensively with the ball, understanding his job is more to distribute than to score. He gets that now much better than he did in the past.”
Popovich pulling for Florida
“We are pulling for everybody in Florida," he said. “That’s just a horrible thing to watch on TV. To think of what they went through and now they have to do it again, we all wish them well. But that’s a tough one. Can’t imagine.”
Milton made landfall Wednesday night as a Category 3 storm on Florida’s central west coast. It’s another blow for a state still reeling from deadly Hurricane Helene.
Concerns over Hurricane Milton and its effects on the storm-ravaged state forced cancellation of Friday’s preseason game in Orlando between the Magic and New Orleans. The game will not be rescheduled.
The Magic were scheduled to return to central Florida on Thursday, but a team spokesperson said the team decided to stay an extra day in San Antonio before departing Friday.
“I want to send our thoughts and prayers to the people back home in Florida,” Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley said. “We hope they make it through safely.”
