As Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama bulks up, teammates take notice

Victor Wembanyama still isn’t ready to enter any bodybuilding contests.
But the Spurs star center will go into his second season better prepared for physical play after bulking up a bit over the summer.
The Spurs listed the gangly 20-year-old Frenchman at 235 pounds on their training camp roster, an increase of 5 pounds from his weight listed on the team’s roster for its season finale in April.
“I would say it’s a natural process because it’s important to work in a way that is good for your body and to respect the body’s identity,” Wembanyama said. “So, I really, really put an emphasis on getting strength.”
Wembanyama said his goal was to increase his core strength and that his modest weight gain was a byproduct of that effort.
“Weight will come with strength,” he said. “It’s just a result of the good work we have done all summer. I am really satisfied with the summer we just had here.”
Wembanyama said he has experienced an annual increase in his strength since “forever.”
“I want to keep going in that direction because it is obviously the primary thing that I love to expand my game,” he said. “It (allows) me to play through contact and it also (increases) my athleticism in general.”

Much of Wembanyama’s work to gain strength occurred before he played at the Paris Olympics in late July and August.
“I spent maybe like two months here in San Antonio, and those two months of hard work were enough to make me pass to another step,” he said. "And after the Olympics, I spent four or five weeks working here in San Antonio, and it was enough to make me pass another step.
“This is how I want to go. I want to be progressing every year, every summer. It helped me already during the Olympics and I am sure it is going to help me in the season, too.”
His teammates have noticed a difference.
“He’s shooting the ball really well, it seems like, from everywhere," Zach Collins said. “If you push him off his spot, he’s comfortable shooting the shots. Nobody is going to block his jump shot, obviously. But last year if he got pushed off, it was a tough fadeaway. Now he seems solid.”
Said Jeremy Sochan, “In the warmups we do some physical stuff, and he is definitely stronger. It’s not a surprise with the way he works.”
Champagnie unsure of role
Two days into training camp, it remains uncertain who will replace injured guard Devin Vassell in the starting lineup.
The fifth-year pro is expected to miss at least the first five games of the season after undergoing surgery to repair what the Spurs termed a stress reaction in his right foot.
Candidates to replace Vassell include third-year pros Julian Champagnie, who started a career-high 59 games at forward last season, and Malaki Branham, who started 29 games at guard last season after logging 32 starts as a rookie.
“I don’t know how that is going to go,” Champagnie said. “I really don’t spend my time thinking about that one. Obviously, (Vassell) is not going to play at the beginning of the season, so the minutes will be there. Do I know if I am going to start? No. If I do, hooray. If I don’t, hooray. It doesn’t really matter to me. I am just here to make the team better.”
Branham also said there have been no signals yet regarding Vassell’s replacement.
“Nobody has a solid role," Branham said. "It’s different teams every day. We’re going to mix it up, next man up.”
The Spurs open their four-game preseason schedule at home against Oklahoma City on Oct. 7. The regular season kicks off at Dallas on Oct. 24.
“Obviously, it is a blow because Devin is Devin, one of our main guys,” Champagnie said of the club’s second-leading scorer last season with a per-game average of 19.5 points. “But like coach (Gregg Popovich) always says, ‘It’s next man up.’ We got to figure it out. (Vassell) will be back, which is great. It is no season-ending thing, knock on wood. But, yeah, we are just day by day, we’ll figure it out.”
