San Antonio Spurs investor Paul Viera expands stake in franchise
Paul Viera is the founder and CEO of Earnest Partners.
As the Spurs and the city continue their push for a new downtown arena, the club announced Wednesday that one of their key investors is expanding his equity stake in the franchise.
The Spurs said in a press release that Paul Viera’s increased investment “reflects his belief in the team’s long-term growth and success.”
Viera is the Atlanta-based founder of the global investment firm Earnest Partners, which oversees more than $50 billion for municipalities, states, corporations, endowments and universities.
“I am incredibly excited about the Spurs culture and the direction in which the team is heading,” Viera said. “The Spurs have a legacy of success and a promising outlook for the next decade and beyond. I look forward to continuing to support the team’s growth and achievements.”
The NBA Board of Governors has approved the transaction, which comes a week before the Spurs and 20-year-old franchise cornerstone Victor Wembanyama are set to open training camp for the 2024-25 season.
The Spurs did not release the size of Viera’s stake in the team or whether he bought out any other shareholder. But, citing two unnamed sources, CNBC reported Viera increased his stake from 5 percent to 11 percent as the valuations in NBA teams rise in large part because of the league’s new $76 million, 11-year media deal.
Viera bought out food services company Aramark’s remaining interest in the Spurs at a “steep discount” in a deal that values the team at $2.5 billion, CNBC reported. The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss nonpublic information.
Viera originally bought into the Spurs in spring 2023 as a strategic partner and a member of the club’s board of managers.
“Paul has proven to be a strong strategic partner and we are thrilled to see his continued commitment to the Spurs investor group,” Peter J. Holt, the managing partner Spurs Sports & Entertainment said. “His increased commitment brings further value to our organization, reinforcing our shared vision for the Spurs and community. We look forward to working even more closely with him to build upon our legacy and reach new heights.”
The Holt family remains the largest shareholder of the Spurs.
Guggenheim Securities, LLC acted as the financial advisor for the transaction.
The transaction is in keeping with an NBA push to increase team ownership by people of color or former players, CNBC reported.
City officials have been making plans to transform the southeast corner of downtown into a sports and entertainment mecca, an effort that would include a new Spurs arena and cost billions of dollars, according to documents obtained by the San Antonio Express-News.
The city’s code name for the plan is Project Marvel.
SS&E has proposed paying about one-fifth of the cost of a new arena, sources familiar with Project Marvel told the Express-News.
The city is in talks with the Spurs about building an arena at the Institute of Texan Cultures site and possibly surrounding it with housing, restaurants and stores. Sources have said such a facility could cost about $1.2 billion, though it’s unclear whether that estimate included an adjoining mixed-use development.
The disclosure came in a letter the Spurs sent to the state Office of the Attorney General arguing against disclosing information being sought by the San Antonio Express-News under Texas open records law.
The Spurs’ current home is the Frost Bank Center, formerly known as the AT&T Center, on the East Side. Bexar County owns the 19,000-seat arena and has a lease with the Spurs that expires in 2032.
